Libertarians and Drinking Laws
    #3264743 - 10/22/04 02:54 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Would Badnarik do anything about the drinking age? Would he change it from 21 to something else? This is where I am very confused. He believes adults should have the right to put whatever they want into their bodies, but, when does a person really become an "adult"?

This is always a tough question. When does a person become an adult? I can't tell you what Badnarik thinks(though I think he'd probably leave it up to the states to decide), but I would prefer to see the drinking age lowered to 16, if not younger. Actually, I think that should be the age for buying alcohol, but if a parent wants to let their child have some beer or wine, I don't think it should be illegal. I believe in many European countries, it's common for children to drink beer or wine with their parents.

I'm pretty sure it's already legal for parents to give their kids alcohol. Well at least in my state.

my state has the worst alcohol laws in the country.

i once lost my driver's license for 3 months for underage drinking. i was 19 years old, my BAC was below the 'legal limit' (.08) and i was nowhere near my car. $300 fine, 16 hours required 'alcohol education', 3 months with no license, and my auto insurance company used it as an excuse to increase my premiums by $30 a month. stupid laws.

If you are under 21 and are caught with a BAC above .02 in my state, then you are fined just as much as having a BAC over .08 when youre of legal age.

Under 21 here gets their license suspended for 6mo if their BAC is .02% or above. DUI if it's .08% or above.

DUI laws are pretty ridiculous. Even MADD found that people with .08 - .1 weren't the problem cases.

Here in Georgia it is perfectly legal for kids to drink with their parents.
