Something you don't see every day...
    #3261617 - 10/21/04 06:15 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Went on a hunt with @cro today to go check out a spot that had been described as having more shrooms than we could pick before they rot.  I was sceptical  until we got out there and saw the hundreds upon hundreds (probably thousands) of blue ringers, many were past their prime, but there were plenty of nice specimens and plenty more pins on the way.  seriously a crazy fruiting of psilocybes .  anyway, I took lots of pics, so I thought I'd post some mycoporn for ya'll . they don't do the size of this fruiting any justice, but it kinda gives you the idea of what we were up against, got tired of picking before we were out of shrooms to pick

We noticed a few variations as we picked, one seemed to stay very conical as it grew and had a nipple at the tip, they had thinner stems and a thinner ring as well.  the other kind got wavy caps as they got older and had a very thick ring and thicker stems, the caps had an umbo like cyanescens, not a pointy nipple like the other form.  I don't know if they're different species or what, they were all growing in the same area.  I'm thinking the wavy ones are definitely p. stuntzii, but the others I'm not so sure about...

both types, in my spore covered hand

both side by side on the left

patch of the conical ones

a patch of the wavy ones, with some conical ones in the lower left, deeper striations, different colored/shaped cap, different veil...different species?

some oyster mushrooms

not sure what these are, they almost look like shiitake but I doubt they are, I was too busy with the other mushrooms to really check em out

thanks for the ride @cro, and also much thanks to the other shroomers we met there for letting us in on that

I accept the shroom spirit into my heart.

I long to see the shroom heaven when I become worthy.

Shroom on dude!

I met you at HF 02 didn't I?

Damn nice find, I find it amazing when stunzii fruits like that, I hope to one day view something like that in person.

Would the conical ones be var. tenuis? The others look like normal blue ringers, just pretty beefy.

5 shroomies to you (though I think you may have enough already)

I'm not sure, but I don't think the others are var. tenuis. I think they're a different species, maybe along the lines of subfimetaria/sierrae or fimetaria, or maybe something else...

Good GOD! I can't imagine finding a patch quite THAT prolific!

I hadn't realized that blue ringers looked so much like Cyans.

So they like the bark also????

Hmmmmmm. I must check my patch closer then. May have passed by some goodies thinking they were bad boys!

Great going all of teh hunters on that group find!

DH,
When you get up enough energy to go at it again I'll show you another spot in that general vicinity (within the fence) that fruits like that with Semis. This is not a joke.

I've always been a little slow.

Well here's the pics that I took, although I don't get the nice upload limit

Well let's start out with a habitat shot to get a feel for the patch, mind you, this is a very small portion:

Now on to some group shots, here's a couple pics of the conical ones DH mentioned above, you can really see the striate margins in here:

And some others:

Looks a lot like cyans, huh?

Peace, and thanks IHS
