how much water in PC?
    #3263872 - 10/22/04 10:02 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Ok, so I managed to get ahold of a PC (Mirro 8 qt.) and Im finally ready to pressure cook, but Im having a problem! This site says to fill the PC so that theres 1 inch of cold water in the PC. But the instruction manual says to put two quarts of water in. That seems like a huge difference to me! Should I just use the two quarts or does that number seem way too high? Also, I read about throwing vinegar in as being optional. Should I just dump in like a teaspoon or does that even matter? Thanks!

Also, even after reading the instructions Im still really not sure what Im supossed to do. Just put the water in, put the jars in, lock the lid, turn stove up to 2/3 as high as it goes, and then wait for the thing to jiggle vigorously and then keep adjusting the stove temp for an hour so that it jiggles lightly? Is there supossed to be any steam that comes out from the steam release? If so what does that mean and what do I do?

Heres some parts of the instructions that didnt make any sense to me:

13) With pressure control off, heat on high until steam comes out of vent tube. Let steam vent for 10 mins.

14) After venting, place control on vent tube using a hot pad at correct pressure setting according to the chart.

15) When control jiggles vigorously, reudce heat so that control rocks or jiggles gently.

Count processing time from the time the control starts to jiggle vigorously.

Use 1 inch.

punkgod94: I just bought the same PC. Basically, what you do is, fill the water, put the jars in and heat on high (without the Pressure Control on the Vent Tube) until you see steam coming from the Vent Tube. Then put the Pressure Control on and when it starts to jiggle, reduce the heat to medium (or low, depending on your stove) and start counting from there. Does that make more sense?

And as far as the vinegar is concerned, it doesn't matter. That's only to prevent some staining in the pressure cooker.

I would think following the directions on the water level would be the best way to go. Every PC is made different and needs different levels. Their own individual water amounts should come to about 1 inch in the PC but there's all sorts of sizes so follow your directions.

Ok, thanks very much for all your input. I saw that page before but couldn't find it.

I have another question. I am currently PC'ing. I waited the first 15 minutes for steam and then put my 15 psi gauge on. It's currently pressurizing and it's making a LOT of steamy noise. IS that normal or am I going to blow the thing up??? The 15 psi ball has begun to rock every now and then (letting some steam out) but i wouldnt say it is consistently vigorously doing it. Should I wait longer or consider that to be vigorous enough? I dont have a leak somewhere do I? Also, the red overpressure pin has NOT popped up so I guess there cant be too much pressure in there? And there are some water droplets coming out along with steam in the vent tube, even though the pressure balls are on it. Is this normal? It's been going for about 20 minutes since I put the 15 psi ball on.

Read pages 9 and 13 of the instruction manual. Hopefully that'll answer some of your questions. As far as the Pressure Control only rocking back and forth now and then, let it wait a little while longer. I assume when they say vigorously they mean it.

Alright Thanks! And by the way, its not been over 45 minutes and its not jiggling as vigorously as I had expected. I mean its not rocking consistently, but it will shoot up and down a few times letting off lots of steam, so I guess thats just what they meant by vigorous. I guess we'll see soon enough. I really do appreciate everyones help! I know Im a newbie and it probbaly really shows, but Im doing this for two reasons and one is that I think it makes for a great experiment. So even if I fuck up this time its great to know that I have people to turn to who can point out what I possibly did wrong, or what I can do better  Thanks again everybody.

I have a tiny (6 quart) pressure cooker. When I first followed online directions and put an inch of water in, it was way too much.

putting 3/4 of an inch (maybe 2/3) made a huge difference.

I must've done something wrong then because I added more like an inch and a half in my 8 qt PC and when it finally depressurized to room temp I opened it real quick to look in and there was no water left, only some droplets stuck to the top and sides of the PC.

Once you put the weight on you should turn the heat as low as you can and have the weight jiggle lightly.
Also, if its completely empty that could be very dangerous.

The PC weight wasn't jiggling very well. There was not one time during the whole process where it would go up and down repeatedly signaling for me to turn the temp down. It would only do it every now and then (15 second intervals or more) so I just assumed the heat was OK. Is it supossed to jiggle up and down more than that or was that the signal to turn the heat down?

And why exactly is it dangerous? Because of the pressure possibly blowing the lid off? Or another reason?

Thanks.
