Double Ended Intro caseing
    #3263870 - 10/22/04 09:59 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

This is a double ended Intro Caseing, the jar has verm on the bottom and the top. The cake is 22 days old, the substrate in the middle is fully white and it has been spreading over to the verm. The growth slowed done so I figured it was finished. I then took it off the heat, and let it hit light a few hrs a day, I also took the tinfoil off from the jar lid and replaced it with a paper towel to allow for more air to enter. I hope to trigger pinning. Am I doing anything wrong? Can I improve on something?

I think paper towel is a big no no anywhere in any procedures except for wiping up mess afterwards. It's just inviting contam IMO.

I also double end case my cakes, but I don't do bottom of the jar with verm for 2 reasons. 1. More verm means less substrate, and 2. bottom is a good indicator for when the jars are near 100% colonization. If you put the verm on the bottom, you give yourself more stuff to guess at.

Also, I use fine/medium verm for casing material on cakes and casing. They hold more water IMO when they are finer. Also, I had numerous pins growing through the top verm layer when fruiting. A lot easier to grow through and see.

I'm not sure if you are trying to grow shrooms invitro, but I dunk/coldshock/double end case, then throw that baby in a terrarium. If that's what you wanted to do, we've got few adjustments we need to make to your current setup.

Your mycelium looks healthy, though. Good luck!

Sam

Yeah the paper towel can hold mold spores, I would remove it asap. If you are going to grow in the jar I would drop the cake out and remove some of that top layer too thick and yes the finer verm works better. I would put a fresh clean moist layer of verm on there and put it back in the jar if your content on growing that way.BTW you can find all sizes of rubbermaid boxes to use as terraniums. The shoebox size rubbermaids work good for small numbers of cakes. What strain ya got there? For invitro the best strain I have seen is Amazon, pins like crazy in the jar if that's your thing. Good luck.

Think he'll be able to get fruits without fanning? I guess you can, since you can get shrooms invitro.. Hmm...

Yeah but they will grow slow, just leave that lid a little loose so the CO2 can drain out. As said before you don't need that paper towel an invitation for contams just leave the lid a little loose. I would put it in a terranium, but to each his own.

As far as invitro growing goes, you want to have as much room as you can manage in there. Many people remove the dry verm that was originally in the jar once the jar is fully colonized, just to make room for the fruits which will already have a tough time in there.

ok so remove the paper towel, but would that not invite more contams in? My jar lid has four holes in it.
Yes I am also going to fruit this as intro.

Go to the post office and get a tyvek envelope, they're free.

Tyvek is used a filter for jars. PF jars don't need it. The reason for the dry verm layer on top is to keep out contams. Tyvek allows for gas exchange which is good for colonizing jars but you want more of a complete air exchange a few times a day.

done, I added tyvek and took away the paper towel.
Should I remove the bottom verm layer? or leave the jar alone now

You should have left it alone to begin with. Invitro jars you just move to the light, don't open them or flip them or do anything to them but move them to somewhere they get light and wait until the mushrooms are mature. You do relize invitro grows give you smaller yeilds though right?
