The mushroom gods are kind

I totally half-assed my first casing cause I was stressed out when I made it. There was still steam coming out of the verm after it was in the microwave and I cased the substrate in it anyway. Well, after misting it last night, I checked back today and mycelium was already poking through the verm in 5 or 6 spots. I was wondering just how wet the casing layers should be. Right now, they are moist to the touch but not damp. Any suggestions on how to make this flush a sucess, casings kind of freak me out for some reason. People talk about them like they are really easy to screw up.

Eh, damp but not so badly that you can see water droplets on it. You want to see it like glisten. Then when pins form, no more misting is necessary (as it would rot the shrooms if it was too severe). And casings are a godsend... hard to screw up. Just follow the teks, be sterile, and you'll be fine and get a lot of great shroomies

The casing layer sounds to have the correct moisture content, although I wouldn't suggest touching your casing with bare hands. Don't get it too wet or you will be asking for cobweb. Everyone initiates pinning in casings at their own preference, some wait till just before the myc reaches the top of the casing layer, then again some wait until the entire top of the casing is fully colonized before initiating. However you decide to do it should be fine. Some people fear getting overlay but I believe it was shirleyknott who claimed that he always lets the entire casing layer colonize without having problems with overlay.

Everyone says to mist to the glisten. When i do this with my ultra fine sprayer, the side walls of the casing container build up large water droplets so i stop for fear of them running down into the casing and creating hell. Any suggestions?
