fruiting initiation
    #3262240 - 10/21/04 08:32 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

i was wondering if someone can tell me when the best time to intitiate fruiting is, when you see a little tiny biy of mycelium poking through, or when there is a medium amount showing, the casing guide says to initiate fruiting as soon as you see mycelium poking through in the valleys of the casing, i can see mycelium, but just a little bit in some places should i initiate fruiting now or wait until i can see little more? anyone? please? thanks

I think what you mean is initiate pinning, you should put a little bit of your casing mix over the first spots that show up, then stick in the fruiting chamber. this will allow the rest of the mycelium to catch up and give you a more even pin set which equals more full grown mushrooms.

someone correct me if im wrong here

how long should i keep patching like that? does anyone have a picture showing what a casing layer should look like when one initiates pinning?

I think just once, but im not absolutely sure. I only patched once and got a great pin set. It all depends on how evenly you lay your substrate and casing. The more even the better, you may not need to patch if its poking out all over the place. From what I understand you dont want the casing to completely colonize. If done properly it should look more like mushies just growing out of casing not on top of myc. Though Ive seen what looks like nearly completely colonized casings do amazing in pics. It works eaither way to some degree but with too much colonization you run the risk of overlay. good luck

How do you initiate pinning? I have some casings that are almost totally covered in myc, but haven't pinned yet.

1. 10 degree drop in temp ie from 84 in incubator to 74 in fruiting chamber
2. addition of oxygen by means of fanning or humidifier
3. introduction of light around 12 hours a day

if theyre being shy try stickin them in the fridge over night... in a plastic bag of course to avoid possible contams lurking in the fridge.

good luck
