Hunting in Japan - pics of J-shrooms
    #3259191 - 10/21/04 02:13 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Today I went hunting for psilocybe argentipes. I've had a lot of trouble finding information about this species - it seems that nobody has had much experience of/with it.

Unfortunatley I did not find what I was looking for- perhaps it's now too late in the season to find this shroom - if anybody has any info on it please post here.

But - I did find a couple of other interesting fungi. I don't have any english musrhroom guides with me, so I can't look these up - what do you reckon they are?

Firstly the location - in the mountains of west Japan. Mainly coniferous forest - but some deciduous trees too. Mushrooms found growing from litter on forest floor.

This one looks like orange peel fungus..

The last two images are of the same speices - but I don't know what they are. They had a smooth texture - but the stalks were very fragile and came apart in strips. The Veils weren't broken but gills loked white/light yellow.

Anybody know what other active species grow in Japan?

sayonara.

The camera is a 5 megapixel Canon IXY 500.
I think it may be called the IXUS 500 in the states.

I was in Hokaido two years ago, I have some pictures from the trip also... strange mushrooms in a strange land!

Im in Aichi and I've been keeping my eyes peeled both around the city and up in the hills. The fungi in general have been fruiting for the last month or so with all the typhoons. No sign of any psilocybes yet, but my hunch is that the cooler nights may bring them up. The crazy humid summer would have been time to look for cubesw or copes but trying to find a green field in my part of japan is like looking for a needle on a haystack. Anyway, Im off to check the parks after the mondo typhoon. As to specifics, I don't have a clue but Im checking pine forests, bark gardens, rough grassy areas etc - the usual psilocybe haunts. Gambate ne! Good Luck!

So Rev - are you only looking for P. Argentipes, or are there other speices out there at this time of year?

I was thinking that maybe it was too late for P. argentipes - but I don't know anything about it so if you do - please let me know.

Yes - we had A LOT of rain on wed and thurs.... maybe I'll have another look tomorrow.

Kopelandiaa - in what type of habitat have you found p. argentipes? I was looking in mainly coniferous litter but didn't find anything. I've heard grass in parks may also yield them?

Are there any other psilocybes worth looking for?

"in what type of habitat have you found p. argentipes?"
I didn't found anything yet ... :frown:
If you look on the japanese guides, it is said that it grows in parcs and gardens, in grass and wood debris.
Another psilocybe that could be fruiting now is Venenata. Subaeruginascens is said to fruit more in the spring (dunno why)...
And, again, i'm sure that it could be possible to find some laughing gyms (Owairaitake) ! Hmm the scorching sun evaporated all the humidity very quickly in the Kanto area... :frown: what a shitty year...i felt like in summer today...
