How can I get the humidity down in my PMP?
    #3261958 - 10/21/04 09:30 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Is there an easy way to lower the humidity in a PMP? I built it to Magash's specs, and it has been running for the past month+. Every time I open the lid there is a large amount of condensation on the roof. Also, my shrooms are normally covered in mycelium and quite often abort, things I attribute to too much moisture on them (I've got my casings in there, not cakes).

I had to use perlite, as I couldn't find those special rocks. Is that my problem?

Any ideas?

Don't use perlite. Use an evaporative humidifier. Connect the input and output of the humidifier to the pmp with sections of garden hose. This keeps the humidity at 87-93, which is great for casings.

Yeah I hear that with perlite. Add weather stripping to one side of the lid so it slants. This way the water on the lid will run to one side. Cut pieces of the weather stripping to fill the gaps on the side of the lid since it's slanted now. (Very easy to do)

Just a regular humidifier? You wouldn't have a picture of this setup would you?

Increase the water in the perlite, less evaporative zone = less humidity.

The condensation is from the temperature difference between inside the tub and outside. There are few ways to stop this. Try candle wax. Just take a candle and draw like you'd with crayon covering all the surfaces on inside of the lid(lid only). It helps keep some amount of insulation and will keep condensed moisture down.

If you really insist on lowing humidity, you can take 1 wand out from underneath and put it on top of the perlite. I'll lower the humidity down to about 89-91%(slight variation on different spots in the pod). If you have 1 single pump doing the entire pod, this isn't going to work. You'll need either a dual pump or two separate pumps.

Good luck.

Sam

This is the setup.

The humidifier is in the back (Honeywell 3500). I taped the vents on the bottom then connected the hose. The green area is plastic restricting the air into the tube. There is no tek, I was just experimenting, and it works great.

Awesome idea. I'm going to try this asap. Thanks for the pic!
