Hunting question
    #3260260 - 10/21/04 01:42 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Ok, so I am going to try some mushroom hunting soon, what I want to ask though is about what time of day I should go? Do you HAVE to go during the day? how many of you hunt at night? See the cow field i want to go to is right along side of a road and cops patrol during the day and I will get spotted if i go hunting during the day, unless i wear a gully suit anyway... so what I want to know is how many of you go hunting in cow fields during the night? What should i do differntly than if i went during the day? Should i bring my gun in case there is a lose bull? I know these questions seem stupid but im 100% serious here... im still a newb

I don't get to visit many cow fields because they are private property. You might want to ask permission of the owners - that is the safest way. Even if some of them say no, I'm sure that eventually one would allow you to go pick some mushrooms. Just tell them the truth. Sneaking around at night is risky. I would suggest not bringing a gun, it could possibly get you into trouble. Good luck.

I like going hunting in the woods. But I am mainly into edibles and non-active species photography/identification as a hobby. So depending on your location, hunting in the woods may not be productive when searching for active mushroom species.

No don't bring a gun, it wouldn't stop a bull comming at ya anyways -- I belive there is a tek on bull avoidance issues. Someone said ask for permission, that works more than you would think.

Then again they could just say "ok" and let you wander out in their field then call the cops anyways. Some previous hunters might have pissed him/her off -

bringing a gun on you would really get you fucked if you got caught.. plus shooting someones livestock would really get you fucked.. plus shooting an animal for being in his area is really fucked.. conclusion.. guns are for pussies

Trying to picture a hunter crawling around a cow pasture, in camo's - a few grenades strapped to his crest and his trusty m16 by his side.

I dont know how you plan on hunting in the dark. I mean, can you see in the dark? Do you have night-vision goggles, perhaps? If you're worried about cops and getting caught I think a flash-light may draw a little attention.

I went last night around 10 PM It was a bit risky, the field is protected by big barbed fence then thickets of pricker bushes and another barbed fence, however i found a small grotto in the groves of shrubs where a tree had fallen and crushed the 2 fences flat and made a small entrance to the field. Lucky for me because there was no way i was scaling a 6 foot high barbed fence with my bags and stuff.

Anyway once youre in the field there is a hill to the right and a slop to the left and the thicket keeps any cops from the road from seeing me especially if i keep it low to the ground. I found 100s of cow patties, but no mushrooms.

My next question is... what kinds of cow patties should i spend the most time investigating around... some were very fresh, and some were dried out and flat and old andsolid. What should i be looking for exactly in a cow field?
