First casing photos
    #3260175 - 10/21/04 01:13 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Alright, so this is my first grow. I inoculated 10 1 pint jars with the blue meanie strain. Needless to say, it too forever for the jars to culture, and none totally finished. I took the top 4 about 6 days ago and cased them, cutting off the small parts that weren't colonized.

After 3 days of birthing I moved them to my perlite humid terrariums. Since then the tops have almost entirely been covered with myc. I fan them about 2-3 times per day, but otherwise I have just let them be. I "misted" them the day I moved them to the terrariums, which just seemed to make the myc look kind of soggy, so I haven't done it again. As of yet, I haven't seen any pins. How long should that take? Is there anything else I should be doing? The humidity in the terrariums is at about 95%...is that too high for casings? Let me know how you think these look.

That second pic down on the left looks like it's forming knots and getting ready to pin IMO, but I have an untrained eye compared to a lot of people here.

You may want to lower your RH if at all possible by 10%, but they will still grow at 95%, I just hear a lot of people suggesting 85% for casings.

It seems like you're doing it right, just be patient and you will be rewarded!

Very good job so far by the way!

I'm predicting pins before the next couple days are up. I don't see why you should coldshock, your mycelium is starting to poke through the casing layer, knots will form, primordia and then caps. I think you're good to go as it is right now.

What are knots by the way. I've been looking at the casings, and there are a lot of places where the mycellum has grown into little "strings" sort of, instead of the wispy fluffy stuff. Is that knotting?

Alright, so I'm thinking about giving them a good cold shock tonight. The top of the verm is almost totally colonized, and still no pins at all. Might be good to try and initiate pinning. How low can you lower the temp? It's about 55 outside right now, which was where I was thinking I'd put them.

I would do what silven says and hold off for a bit. Although coldshocking works great, I don't think that it is the solution to this problem. The casing silven referred to does appear to be knotting... I know how hard it is to remain patient for your first grow... but patience is probably all you need here... that is, along with the appropriate environmental factors.
