Bird seed is evil.

Just a quickie about my results with birdseed.
After a week and a half I noticed no growth and a perculiar smell coming from my inc chamber.
I followed the tek TO THE LETTER. However I decided enough is enough and cracked open the jars to dispose. EVERY single one of them stank to high heaven. I had to hold the jars at arms length INSIDE a plastic bag and shake them out before dumping the whole lot in the bin to avoid retching. the jars procedeed to stink indefinately, and still held onto a slight taint after washing with dettol and anti-bac soap FOUR OR FIVE TIMES.
Never again will I try birdseed. I wouldn't even consider feeding poor defenseless birds with that crap ever again either. Gah.

I second that. I think it's due to the 'vitamins' and additives they put in the stuff. If you don't freaking get it all out, it'll stall colonization or not even start. My got a few wispy wisps of myc and they just stopped completely. WBS is crap and I think more work than BRF...

Check out my thread on bird seed. I was definitely getting negative results as well.

If you ever give it another try, do the following:
Follow the tek(it is sound) , but after filling the jars pressure cook them for 20 minutes, then let them cool down a bit, shake them, and let sit for 24 hours. Then pressure cook them for 60 minutes and proceed as outlined.
This should get rid of the bacterial contamination problem you experience.

Yes I do agree, bird seed is a very, very evil substrate indeed. It sux, sux, and REALLY sux. Untill I get up enough nerve to use rye OR popcorn crumpled brf cakes spawned to horse crap is the ONLY way for me.

Your wasting alot of time staying with BRF cakes. Rye is VERY easy, search for magashs simple rye tek. Just because you have had bad luck once or twice doesn't mean that the substrate sucks all together. Bird seed is a little more tricky than rye or popcorn also. Get these two down and then move into bird seed.

Yes, I'm working on getting up the nerve for rye/popcorn soon. I'm looking to eliminate some steps, because while I really like poo, I'm getting tired of the mess. I'm an apartment dweller, and poo has really, really, warn out it's welcome.
I'm looking into rye/popcorn soon, because I can just case this and be done with it. My understanding is it does not flush very well, (one big flush, and smaller flushes later) compared to poo, but casing grains is less messy, and more "stealth"
agree?

Well in comparison to a bunch of smelly horse manure, I would have to concur.
