Liquid cultures
    #3259004 - 10/21/04 02:36 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

With liquid cultures, if they are kept in the right conditions, how long do they last for?

I've read a lot of teks, but most of them say to just keep the in the fridge after you incubate them. They dont actually say how long they can be kept in the fridge for.

Thanks.

Its a while, I've got some Hawaiian karo liquid that is almost a year old. I've kept it in the fridge and it is still working to this day. :sun:

You said it right there. One is in the jar and the other is in the syringe. Both will keep for the same time. You can keep them longer if you keep them in the fridge. Also, they definately keep longer than two weeks, even at room temperature.

As far as I've heard, one should be able to use a karo/honey jar after only a week and a half.

What? Thats silly. Liquid cultures are fine for months. I wouldn't use them past 2 but I've heard of them staying viable after 6 months before.

If you havn't actually tried using them for over 2 weeks and found that they have become unviable then you shouldn't be telling people false information. It's different if you say "I've heard..." but to flat out say it factually "two weeks is it"..

The difference between a syringe and a jar is in a syringe its much harder to break the myc chunks up and if stored for weeks, it could build up to much to become difficult to use. A jar has alot of room to grow and be broken up. A jar also can have fresh karo water squirted into it to replace what you take out. Can't do that with a syringe. A jar and syringe are very different. That's why a syringe of liquid myc doesn't last as long as a jar of it.
