Matsutake Motherload (some chanterelles too)
    #3258344 - 10/20/04 11:39 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Well I went to check a spot I had a feeling would show some results at least for white chanterelles.  After walking less than 20 minutes uphill I started catching the scent and I mean seriously strong of the infamous matsutake.

I looked up the hill a little further and started seeing white paper plate sized disruptions in a fairly clear duff layer.  After picking for an hour I took home this!

Now I know the picture isn't that good, but I am getting ready to clean them so I have them all spread out and thought a picture would be in order.  They are all Tricholoma magnivelare--White matsutake.

These are in no condition to sell or even consider for it, but the sheer number of the older ones definitely encouraged me to pick a few for the kitchen!

I could have been there another 5 hours and probably brought home at least 20 times that amount....including buttons and younger ones.  I am going back tomorrow or next week for another go once I get these all prepared and in some food.

I also found a handful (about 20) blue (Polyozellus multiplex) and white (Cantharellus subalbidus) chanterelles - a fantastic rare find for the blues, and an expected find for the whites.

I again renew my offer to anyone who wants to hunt some edibles with me in the cascades between Adams and Rainier   I hope this entices some takers

There was a fine layer of snow about 5000 feet, white pass had snow on the slopes (just a fine dusting). Rainier was white as can be though, the elevation was about 2200-2500 ft, so im thinking that there may be a reprieve through the first week of november. They have plows up there right now though, so they probably know something is coming soon. I was up at the Walupt lake area around oct 10 and there was not a bit of snow even up as far as 4600 ft. It was cold, but I think that it is worth a try about a week from now.

Thanks for the kind words all, and yes those Polyozellus looked very cool, I found 2 patches and since they are pretty rare, I left a few for good karma.

I am confused? Are these much sought after gourmet mushrooms?
I am like a mushroom, kept in the dark and fed shit
Please let me know whet the fascination is with these.
Nice pics
Happy picking

Great finds, nihil! I find that matsutake preserve best by freezing raw. Don't forget to check them for maggots before cooking or preserving.

beesly brewin, those are indeed the "much sought after gourmet mushrooms" you suspect they are. They are among the best edible mushrooms, with excellent flavor and texture. The flavor is strong enough that a single mushroom is easily enough to make soup for an entire large family.

Happy mushrooming!
