Tub in a Tub Alternative
    #3258150 - 10/20/04 10:55 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I was just wondering if instead of having an aquarium heater (too much $) in the tub in a tub, I would just be able to replace the water with hot water 2 or 3 times a day?

Seriously guys...

Is there any alternative besides using a lightbulb near a carboard box containing the jars?

Yeah - working at McDonals for three hours will take less time than it will to change 10+ gallons of water every 4 hours for 2 weeks. Its called an opertunity cost if you refil it with hot water all the time when you could be making more working at McDonals for less time (Economics).

On a more logical note - i think my hot tap water is more like 100 F. than the 82 F. you need, also its gonna fluctuate all the time, as far as the temp in there goes. just incubate in some styrafome containers if you cant afford a heater, prob safer for tha myc. than fluctuating all the time between 100 F. after you change it to 70 F. at three in the morning when you are sleeping and it hasent been changed for 6 hours.

Well good luck anyway - ive used a styraphome containers on pf-jars just to keep umm away from the bud smoke and dirty air floating around the room, and they colonized rather quickly...

I'd say a lightbulb in a cardboard box probably isnt a real good idea. I've incubated a jar in the exhaust of my PC's PSU before (oddly enough, it sits on exactly 84F), if your budget is really THAT limited

Yep notsloth thats a good idea. Ive always germed my seeds around computers. On top the monitor gets pretty hot but behind the tower should work great. You could even throw some crinkled newspapers or towels/blankets and make a small chamber for your jars behind the tower.

But bottom line, get the heater man.

Water will cool very fast.  And you'll end up taking the mycelium on a temperature roller coaster.  I agree it's a bad idea.

But since you are on a very limited budger...  try this procedures

1.  Open up yellow pages.
2.  Find small tropical fish stores.
3.  Call and ask them if they have used aquarium heaters.
4.  Ask them how much?
5.  Drive there and purchase.

Usually, used tank heaters only cost couple of bucks.  If you don't have a couple of bucks.. follow these procedures.

1.  Take an old jeans and soak in muddy water.
2.  Put some mud on your shirt
3.  Bring an empty can.
4.  Cut out a corner of a cardboard box making sure there are enough rough edges along all sides.
5.  Write "homeless, please help"
6.  Go to the nearest freeway exit.
7.  well.. you know what's here..
8.  count money.  Go to previous instructions.

I'm only kidding, of course.  But if you can find a used one, you should be able to find enough change to get yourself a heater.  Look inside the couch...  always money in the couch.

Sam
