Check this jar--Pic (Post bleach grain)
    #3257089 - 10/20/04 06:34 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Okay, so this jar got contamed with red and black mold.  I injected 60 ml of 50% bleach water into it, shook it around, left it to sit.
Now, it appears that mycellium is recovering and growing over the formerly contaminated grains.
The mycellium is growing over the colored molds, though the mold are not growing; rather, they are tinting the myc.  At least, I think it's myc.  Any thoughts on this?  Thanks all!  GB

Won't that create some poisonous mushies? You better test them yourself before you hand them out.

  No, I don't know if I'd consume these.  I _would_ like to see how this goes if spawned to poo, tho.

Really?  I kind of want to keep it around and see what happens.  Sure, it looks ugly, but he's a good kid.  Have a heart, hyphae.  THis is in the name of mycological experimentation.

Just don't let him play with the other kids ya know? Kids can be kinda cruel sometimes and you know they make fun of him , and that will lead him to having an ill deserve complex that he may never out grow. :frown: BTW I grew molds for a couple of years back when I first started, man were some of them pretty!!!

Thanks.  Little Jimmy is in the "Special Kids" room as we speak.  He's far behind everyone else, so he needs special attention.
On less pertinent matters, do you think this is myc?  Are there any molds that grow like that?  Or is it possible that the myc could have recovered (as I think it has)?  Thanks man!

It does resemble myc alright. Not healthy myc but myc none the less.

Well, then, I think the path ahead is clear.  We'll let it go and see how things turn out and then maybe we can mainstream him into poo later in the semester.

Thanks!

You have him in standing in bleach water. This can go from a useful experiment to something else rather quickly I see. Your notion of this somehow working out spooks me bro!

Should I draw that extra water out with a syringe? I wanted to, but I was afraid if I tipped the jar sideways, the bleach water would run over the myc and kill it. Doesn't bleach water break down after awhile? It's been like 2 weeks, maybe more, since I injected the bleach. Thanks!

Yes chlorine turns to gas and dissipates if there's enough FAE. I'd say pour it out opening the lid as little as possible. GL

I know it looks bad.  But if you were to see it in real life, you'd sort of understand.  The myc is sort of leeching the colors off the dead mold deposits.  It looks nasty, but it might just go-go-go.
Anyway, this is no biggie.  I got a backup plan, in action.
Thanks for the comment, tho, dude.

I understand but after working with multiple generations of grain to grain transfers (beyond 4 gens) you get shitty mycelium that looks like that and then produces flushes like this:

As opposed to the first generation of the strain that produced flushes like this:

It also takes forever to produce. Sloppy myc IME has always produced sloppy shrooms and has been a waste of space. HOWEVER..it's in your space and not wasting mine, so I'm all for you giving it a shot and seeing if it works  I still wouldnt eat them or feed them to anyone who wasnt aware of there being a slight chance that they die.

Those pics are hilarious.  Let's hope it doesn't happen.  I think I'll spawn them to poo at a decent ratio and just see how things go.
And, really, if the myc produces fruit, regardless of the strain/contams present in the jar, how do these contams get transferred to the fruit?
I'm certainly not going to give any fruits, should they develop, to anyone from this batch.  But I might take them myself.  I mean, if the poo doesn't contaminate after it's spawned with this grain, aren't things in the clear?  THanks man!

The myc could in theroy take anything from the substrate and break it down and consume it, sometimes taking in poisons. The mushrooms can then take it from the mycelium. This is what the people who study it say. It might not happen but even a .5% chance of death is enough for me to not take them. Spawning to poo would at least help disperse the bleach if it remained.
