Some of you may find this free program useful.
Description: Discover Mushrooms - a Windows based software program identifies wild mushrooms to the species level. The user selects colors, shapes, textures, and other features of an unknown mushroom by clicking on lists and pictures. A list of mushrooms with similar characteristics is then displayed. Over 1,000 species in the database. Ability to add, edit, or view species data. Complete help file and tutorial. For the beginning to intermediate mushroomer.
Downoad from: Discover Mushrooms
p.s. I have no affiliation with the above website or software. I merely came across it, downloaded it myself, and present it here to the community in the hopes that you find it beneficial.

Well, you'll need to look just a wee bit more. After you start the program (using fungi.exe), and clicking on "Identify species", you can then enter various characteristics of the mushrooms in question, pertaining to the cap, gills or pores, annulus, color, smell, spores, veil, volva, habitat, color reaction, etc. etc. to get to the species level. The database comes with 1101 species, and you can add more yourself (which I think is a very cool feature)
It's a basic program, not flashy at all, but useful. Of course it would be best used in conjuction with one or more good field guides.

I'll check my bookmarks, but in the meantime check out this online indentification database at (note: it's a small database) www.agarics.org or even better is Gary Lincoff's Key to Gilled Mushrooms of the Audubon Guide available either online here --> Mushroom, The Journal or in the downloadable .pdf form here --> Mushroom, The Journal
In case you did not know, "Mushroom, The Journal of Wild Mushrooming" is an excellent magazine, well worth the price, in my opinion.
