Time cover story this week
    #3254552 - 10/20/04 02:44 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I really don't like this forum much.  I think most of the people are fucked off their gourds and in fantasy land.  But, that's my subjective view of things.  Just wondering if anyone read this article in Time.  Thought it was very interesting.  Whatever expression/codification we have of the inexpressable is interesting.  Peace out, y'all.

I'm just saying I don't share the approach to/interpretation of my brain's chemical activation that many in this forum appear to share.  Sure, this is being dismissive.  But the language I see used in this forum makes me dismiss it.  Just like if I were sitting in an Evangelical sermon; I'd get restless and leave after 5 minutes because I disagreed with the language they were using.  We might, however, be talking about the same end/mindstate.
And I don't have a link, sorry.  I'm too lazy to find one just now.

:smirk:

That looks intriguing... will have to check it out. I wrote a post on something that seems to be very related recently.

PS what does your 'subjective view' of this forum have to do with this thread? you are still here to share an interest and seek input...

I like the feathered dianosaur evidence from China.
Love imagining what it was like to be a huge feathered creature in those ancient but new jungles, no humans or large mamals or even birds as such.
Huge insects, strange fruit and mushrooms...

Oh, was that the "Is there a gene that makes us want to believe in god-- some scientists say... maybe" ?

I didn't read the article, but it seems improbable. However, if they can isolate this gene... perhaps a virus could be made that takes the code out.

It is not the gene that makes us believe in God, but as I have already stated, humans CANNOT stand a mystery and believe that by making up a false explanation or giving the mystery a name (that explains nothing), that the riddle is somehow solved.

Yup

I find it odd that children are often born into religions, almost as a way to discourage early questioning stages. I mean, sure some may move beyond this, but they missed out on the best years for development.

It also seems like "adults" play the role of knowing the universe to their kids. It's like, don't worry - this is the way it is - I know. Now watch TV while your mother and I fornicate on the bathroom floor

do you believe in god swami?

I have ALREADY covered this in depth. As there are limitless definitions of God, I find the question as phrased to be meaningless and unanswerable. Do you believe in Gnarg?

do you believe in teleology?

This is just another way of deferring real understanding or substituting one mystery for another.

If one says that there is an ultimate purpose to the universe, how does this stance INCREASE our understanding? Does it tell us what that purpose IS?

If I say that a salt crystal is evidence of purposeful and intelligent design, how does this INCREASE our understanding of chemistry? Can you design new compounds using this "information"?

I am NOT dodging your questions by asking mine, though it may appear that way.

not all knowledge needs justification for inquiry
not many question the point of art, for art is for arts sake much of the time. same can be said for knowledge. if there is no immediate benefit to grasping a theory it does not follow that pondering it is pointless. if anything it will allow us to be more efficient critical thinkers perhaps.
your answer was very teleological in nature, suggesting if there is no purpose to knowledge it is "pointless" knowledge

Methinks you misunderstood or I was not very clear.

Knowledge that tells us nothing or is not usable in some fashion is not knowledge.

The fact that we exist shows an enormous degree of complexity in the universe. If I say that chemicals are self-organizing or If I say we are the result of intelligent design; what do the two seemingly different viewpoints add to our body of knowledge?
