patching
    #3251615 - 10/19/04 01:04 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

How many people patch? I stray away from patching just because I dont want to make up an autoclavable bag full of 50/50+ , pasterize it and only use a few tablespoons of it. What do most of you guys do for the little casing material needed to patch your casings?

some times I patch and some times I dont. When I do patch I just microwave it,it seams to work good and no need to wast good casing material . Have had no problems yet .

I patch always to get nice even flushes. Sure it works otherwise, but unless you made the casing layer very even and it comes up like this:

then you wont get pinsets that come up like this (besides old granddad in the middle):

which turns into this:

Not everyone patches, and some who dont get good results. I like to patch though..

Patching can really increase your yields in many cases. Listen to scatmanrav as he gives good advice. Besides all you do is makeup extra casing when you do your casings, no biggie at all! You do case right?

Oh yeah I forgot about that..I PC all my casing mix in jars and do 9 quarts at a time (or 10 if I use the other PC, but seals not so good) basically because thats all my PC fits. Keep on the shelf and use as needed. Just use quart jars with no holes and flip the lid upsidedown. Only use clean spoons wiped down with alcohol and if you don't use some of the jar, throw the lid back on. It's non nutrious so it should stay sterile for a few days until you need to patch. Obviously if this is to much casing just use a little less but think about how much you'll need total and then add a little to it. Once sterilized it'll last as long as you keep it sealed up when your not using it.

Yeah all my advice on patching and even pinsets came from that guy Hyphae right there so he's a little biased to the advice

As far as patching goes, I'm assuming you can just use ground up verm no matter what you cased with. Covering aggressive growth would make a minimal impact just because you use straight verm, right? Sorry.. .just looking for an alternative. I like fresh things. It give me the warm and fuzzy when I use fresh stuff.

Verm is inferior to 50/50's why settle for less?

I think it would, I think it would mess with your pinset possibly. Not that it might not work ok but it still should be sterilized, it just seems easier to make a little extra casing mix. It stays nice and fresh sealed up in jars, they are canning jars after all  I don't put it seal down though just for easy opening  Still sealed purdy well.
