rye seed
    #3254048 - 10/20/04 12:49 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

My friends dog has been looking around for rye grass seed, but he can't find it anywhere. He was wondering if he could use any type of grass seed as long as it didn't contain any fungicide. He was planning on getting "kentucky bluegrass" or "tall fescue" if they would work.
thanks

you're looking for rye berries not rye seeds. check a local mill, feed store, or health food place. even local grocers carry it, you will just have to special order it. Usually any place that carries health food can special order it. Nevertheless im sure there is a grocery store near you.

I agree with derx. When I first started using rye I couldn't find it anywhere....come to find out I was asking for the wrong thing. Ive always had good luck with healthfood stores. They usually sell it in bulk containers and call them rye berries....I finally asked and ive actually been able to order 50lb bags for dirt cheap.

ya i dont know what that is about. I dont know of anyone who uses rye seed. It also seems a bit silly to close pin the bags then PC them, then impulse seal them after they've been PCed. mycobag is a fruit!

LOL...

They are not silly.
Not all bags can be safely pressure cooked when sealed. Some can and do tear.

As for the rye grass seed, yes, it can and it is used as substrate for P. mexicana, P. tampanensis, but also for Morchella species.

Rye grass seed and rye grain are 2 different things.

The glossary gives an explanation:
http://www.shroomery.org/glossary.php?ltr=R

Rye
A hardy annual cereal grass related to wheat.
Lat.:Secale cereale.
In mushroom cultivation rye grain is used as Spawn medium.

Ryegrass
A perennial grass widely cultivated for pasture and Hay and as a lawn grass.
Lat.:Lolium perenne.
Seeds used as Substrate for P. mexicana and P. tampanensis.

I found the bags to be a pain in the arse that way. Got some from mycosupply and everyone of them contamed. had an impulse sealer and all and followed everything right, I just found it hard to do all the steps correctly. The bags came kinda undone, not undone, just felt loose like something could go in and the impulse sealer was hard to get used to. Harder to deal with injection too compared to jars. None of the 5 bags made it, 4 of the 5 original jars made it though. This was Tampanensis on rye grass. I had some luck fruiting cubies on rye grass, brazils loved it for 2 flushes..put out great flushes. Had 4 quarts (into 4 casings) all did exactly the same..very full two flushes, then not a single shroom. Dunked between all flushes (not before firsh). Was a pain to case too, the mycelium maes it so hard to break up grass. Rye berries is what I normally use, works killer for both Tamps and Cubies.
