a recent harvest around the way used a tablespoon of brf in the casing layer. yet i never hear of it being used as a nutirent option, its a taboo. whats the science here? i knew not to use too much lest we have cake mix but was happy to see it worked. any ideas?

PC is right! the less nutritious the casing layer is, the less likliness of contams and your fruits will come right off the top of the casing layer without tearing up large hunks of mycelium.

Imo,
if there is BRF to add somewhere... it's in the substrate itself. A Casing layer is a layer of protection. Mycelium go through it to reach the surface.

could use it as a bulk substrate if you wanted but there are a lot cheaper ones out there

If it worked once, you got darn lucky. If you feel a need to SAC (supplement at casing), you should use a fully colonized brf cake of the same strain. RR
