Do Jars Need Circulation?
    #3253471 - 10/19/04 10:57 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Do inoculated jars need circulation to colonize? or can they be kept air tight and sealed up?

if your just using PF style flower and verm you can keep it tight sealed, but grain like seed and millet need air. in order to provide air exchang ew/o contams goto the usps website and order some free tyvek envelopes, dont be stupid like i was and pay 10$ for a box of them at the store

They do not need circulation but myc produces co2 and if it can't escape, it will build up which is bad. You need to have a release. Not fresh air but just so gases don't build up. If doing the PF tek tape should never be used, just foil over the dry verm layer and lid. Remove foil to knock up then put foil back on. Grains, as mentioned use a hole that is not taped over (usually two holes, one taped over after innoculating) covered with tyvek.

Do you think that it will produce too much co2 before I birth the cakes... (appx. 4 weeks)
If so...
can i fix it or is it too late.. (jars are sealed and inoculated)

if your doping verm/rice 4 weeks should be fine, but you should shake and turn over the jars every few days to speed them up

Not air tight or sealed up, they stay closed, tape off the holes lids covered with foil. CO2 is excellent for vegetative mycelium growth FYI! Also if using lids foil goes over the lids not under. GL guys

Thanks all.

Good to know ... about the CO2!!!

If you pressure cook the jars with the rubber side down but the lid is left loose, will the jars still be sterilized?

If you have holes in the lid your fine, either way everything sterilizes if done properly. seal up just makes taking it off slightly easier. GL

Yeah I said foil over the dry verm layer and the lid..meaning foil on top of everything

"if your doping verm/rice 4 weeks should be fine, but you should shake and turn over the jars every few days to speed them up"

You should not shake them nor should you turn the jars over every few days. Once should be more then enough, I can't see exceeding two flips though.

I did a test and taped over some of my jars' lid holes, and it was immediately obvious that they had slowed down. After a week, they were several days behind the untaped jars in growth.

I've found that turning the jars upside down speeds colonization compared to just rightside up, too.
