 Worst Smell Ever

It's been a week since inoculation and nothing has happened. I had to throw out my jars because my dad's coming to see me on Friday and I'm already in a shitload of trouble for something and don't want anymore right now. When I opened the jars, there was this smell that came out that almost made me puke. It was the worst smell I've ever smelled. I can't describe it. I don't think anything could grow if that smell is present. All my jars looked fine--no contams or anything, just no germination. What is the cause of this smell? How can it be prevented?

Bacterial contamination is all I can think of. Did you PC or boil your jars?

yeah, the smell of mycellium growing is actually kind of nice, in a weird, funky kind of way. Mushroom Musk is the only way I can describe it, but it doesn't smell bad. If it smells bad, it's contamed.

I boiled my jars. How did the bacteria come about? How can I prevent it next time? Also, I emptied out the jars and washed with very hot water and soap. Can I use them again or should I get new ones?

I would invest in a PC that betters your chances tremendously. Sometimes boiling just doesn't do it. You can get a nice Presto PC pretty cheaply at the Wal-Mart.

u flame steriilize the needle? ur room dirty as shit? flame sterilize OUTSIDE. and if u boil them, boil them ffor 1.5 hours.

Yeah, I was thinking about getting a PC for the next batch. I ordered some course verm. and new spores so I'm waiting for them to get here. Once they do I'll get a PC and start again. I had to throw out my fine verm. and Perlite (didnt want my dad to see it) but I'll pick up some more at Lowes for like 8 bucks total when he leaves.

Yeah, I flame sterilized the needle. No, my room's not dirty. I vacuumed, did the laundry, dusted, took out the trash a few days beforehand. And I inoculated in the bathroom (my toilet and shower are in a separate room with a door...the sinks are in another area.) where I wiped everything down with Clorox wipes, sprayed Lysol, and wiped the walls down with a bleach/water mix.

You can re-use them, they get sterilized anyway.

Other that getting a PC, is there anything else that I can do to help prevent bacterial contamination in the future?

Use a flame to sterilize the needle and wipe it down with alcohol after to cool it. I also wipe down the inject area with an alcohol cotton swab (like they do at the docs office before giving you a shot). And do everything in a clean room, with few carpet like surfaces (all smooth) and clean everything well first.

I flame-sterilized the needle and wiped it down with alcohol on a paper towel. I wiped down the tiled-bathroom with some alcohol and the floors with Clorox wipes. I thought I def. did everything right. I dont know how I got bacterial contams. And since I dont know what I did wrong, I have no way of knowing if I'll get them again.

Should I not inoculate in the bathroom even though I did everything I could think of (and took every suggestion I was given) to create a sterile environment?

No. You know I've seen your all your posts and I'm sure you were sterile enough. Regular old BRF jars, right? Boiling works fine for them (well, steaming). How long did you steam though? An hour worked fine for me when I first did them.
You really don't need a PC for PF jars...

I do everything in the bathroom, inoculation, casing, grain to grain transfers, agar work, and once I start making prints and syringes, them too. It can be a very sterile place (few carpeted surfaces) if cleaned well. It's possible the syringe or that you didnt let the whole needle glow red. I'm not to sure other then that though  sorry..

im almost certain if what you say is true about your sterile procedures the contams are from not PCing the jars. I do innoculations in my regular bedroom which i dont clean at all. I do have a hepa filter running in it though. I only wipe down the table with alcohol, flame the needle, cool with alcohol swab, inject. alcohol the tape and cover the hole. I'm using bags though so its a little different. IME a super clean room doesnt make much of a difference for innoculating. Casing on the other hand I use every sterile procedure.

Oh yeah, you didnt PC them..that could definatly be it. Even PF cakes can fail from a boil. Try again once you get a PC..
