Last two days it rained here in California, so we thought it would be best to take a little trip and do some mushroom hunting.
We drove in north/east from central California and headed for Yosimite National Park.
To our dissapointment, Californias LONG summer toasted all the grassfields. (at least us in the valley). Though we have 100's of miles of cow pastures (most in the world, california produces 2/3's of the worlds food) But we didn't go on private property - tried to keep it as legit as possible.
Trying to figure out what these guys are, these we're found in a petting zoo field, that had been closed for last month or so. [image]http://http://www.belfrysphynx.org/s1-2[/image] [image]http://www.belfrysphynx.org/s2-2[/image]

Yeah, I live in the Bay Area.
I have been hunting for a few years now, and belive me, you wont be finding anything this soon.
These are the first rains we've had in MONTHS. Luckily, on the coast here, we have been having some fog over the past few weeks, which really moisten things up.
Anyways, every year, you should expect to wait at least a week before finding anything substantial. Obviously the smaller mushrooms like Mycena and Coprinus will be popping up first. As well as the grass loving P. foenisceii.
But, for our B. edulis, we'll have to wait a good 2-3 weeks.
We are lucky this year, its supposed to be a wetter winter, and our rains started pretty damn early already.
Good luck!

California sells more rice to China than they grow themself, and the rest of Asia. We get to grow food every season - If your not in SoCal, LA area, or BayArea (SF, Oakland) the rest of california is farmland.
Most milk, cheese, beef - wine, grapes, rice, almost everything is grown here.
Its required to graduate most highschool to take a year of agg.

I had that feeling, about being too soon. We're not as PNW as I would like to be, and I forgot that this was our real first rain.
Do you leave the bay area when you go hunting? I was born there myself, and slowly moved over the hills and 'rolled' into the central valley of California

"California sells more rice to China than they grow themself, and the rest of Asia."
Sorry, this just doesn't add up, might want to talk to your agriculture teacher/professor. According to the California Rice Commission website:
The Role of California Rice in the Nation and World California is the second most important rice state in the United States producing about 20 percent of the nation's crop in a typical year. Most of the world's rice is grown in Asia, with China and India producing more than half of world production and Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Thailand contributing another quarter. Despite being a relatively small producer of rice, the United States and California, have long been important exporters of rice. This is especially true of California, which mainly produces high-quality, medium grain japonica rice that is favored in Northeast Asia and in parts of the Middle East and Mediterranean region.
And, having worked in asian restaurants for more than 10 years, I know a thing or two about rice. All the rice we ever used came from Thailand or China. I have spent time in agricultural areas of California (namely Salinas and Monterey), so I know of the importance of these areas in food production, but 2/3 of world production- no way.

Owned. But I never said 2/3s of the worlds rice. Overall food supply. But prolly overstated that too -
