SUBSTRATE FOR OVEN BAGS
    #321124 - 05/19/01 08:22 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

my friend Sterile has sent me some oven bags and i want to use them. the problem is, i don't know what substrate to use. the teks specify a full range of options, from rye to whole wheat, or vermiculite and BRF or even whole rice. based on your experience, what do you think it's best?
and besides that, considering my bags are not autoclavable, but plain oven bags, will i get away with pressure-cooking them?

and that I was just doing what was necessary to stay comfortable while I waited to die...

Oven bags certainly can withstand the temperature in a pressure cooker.
Substrate: preecooked rye, birdseed, suplemented sawdust-chips, pure woodchips for woodlover-spawn.

i have used rye grain and it worked fine with oven bags. If this would be your first time working with rye i would say blaze a trail and use brf as that tek indicates. as far as pc-ing as long as the bags get 0% water then its ok. try a makeshift foil (or some other handy type) seal in a ziploc.

Sooo, what do you have to do?
Fill oven bag with birdseed for example, and 1/3 of water,(+ polyfill on the seal)
and pressure cook for 1 hour???
Inoculate-wait-shake-wait-case-wait-fan-wait-harvest-dry(optional)-eat-fly-and then again inoculate....

Put rye in hot water and let soak overnight.
Strain and put into bag. Loosely wrap the bag. Sterilize. Let cool. Inoculate. Seal the bag. Shake.

Definitely.. presoaking is the way to go, especially w/ bags. Rinse and strain it good before you PC.

anno.. have you had any trouble w/ bad/leaky seals on FP bags? I double sealed some bags and the Reishi mycelium grew right through the seals. Do you get better seals w/ a higher temp on the sealer? thx

I newer used FP bags. So I can?t really comment on this.
You get a better seal, if the sealing zone of your sealer is broader. But these get expensive then.

Anno....dont they have to be able to breath??(air exchange) for them to colonize quick?
How come you say seal completely??
Should i soak overnight in hot water birdseed as well??
And what about polyfill as a filter as 3Mshroom says?

Anno i just checked out your site for the first time...
I think its the best and most honest of all ;)

Thank you all for the replyz!!!

Thin PP bags allow limited gas exchange, enough for colonization.
>Should i soak overnight in hot water birdseed as well??
Yes, or you can also steep it for some 30-40 minutes.
>And what about polyfill as a filter as 3Mshroom says?
Works well, but i?m not sure it?s necessary. You must not seal the bag before pressure cooking though, or it is going to burst in the PC.
Thats?s where polyfill is good.
