Drinking excessive amounts of "energy drinks"?
    #3251089 - 10/19/04 12:36 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hey I've been drinking a lot of these energy drinks. I'm sure most of you guys in the States have seen them in every gas station and party store for like $1.99 each.  Well I think they're great, they wake me up and give me a sense of well being and just make me feel good all around. I drink about 4 or less of these daily. I was wondering if excessive amounts of the stuff in the energy drinks could be harmful to my body. I don't know if all the shit in it would give me kidney stones or something. They say don't drink more than three cans a day, but I don't know why. The ingredients for a single can of energy drink are as follows:

Taurine-          1000mg
Inositol-          200mg
Panax Ginseng-    100mg
Guarana-          100mg
Creatine-          50mg
Grapeseed Extract- 50mg
L-Carnitine-      50mg
L-Arginine-        10mg
Vitamin C-  200% DV
Folic Acid- 200%
Vitamin B6- 200%
Vitamin B12-200%
Selenium-    50%

Keep in mind, that the given amounts are for one single can, I drink up to four cans daily. My dad said he thinks that Taurine is the main stimulant in the energy drinks. If anyone has any knowledge of how taking up to 800% DV of these vitamins and other substances could possibly have a negative effect on my health, please let me know.
Also, let me know if there's any similar alternative to these drinks that could be purchased at a health food store for much cheaper. Perhaps they sell pure Taurine? Any input is appreciated .

Yeah I've been drinking lots of energy and meal replacement drinks because I have braces and I simply enjoy them. The only adverse effects that I can think of is that it could be hard on your kidneys, possibly your bladder as well. I piss like a fucking race horse at work, and it's usually cloudy (due to all the expelled vitamins) and also worry about what it could do in the long run.

Too much of anything's not going to be good, that's for sure. I've noticed that lots of grocery stores, such as Save on Foods, sell these for a little bit less than other places, especially corner stores! Perhaps going to a wholesale place like Costco can significantly reduce the price if you buy in bulk... something to look in to. :crazy2:

Get more sleep, thats the cure to bein more awake. Energy drinks are BS. Drink some soda, itd be just as harmful. Ive also heard that taurine comes from bull balls, hence, taurus-bull.

It's not any of the things you listed that gives you energy, its the caffeine. 4 of those a day is an excessive amount of caffeine + sugar.

I am addicted to coffee. A large cup of coffee a day or I'm getting headaches, its one of my vices, but also one of those things I look forward too in the day.

There is no reason to drink 4 of those badboys in one day, cut it back to at 2 at the MOST. Even though, try the sugar-free kind if you are looking to be healthy.

I am in love with Acidic_Sloth
