straw colonization time?
    #3250987 - 10/19/04 11:43 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Well I was not able to get an answer yesterday so I will repost today. Homie has a 23 qt bin with pasterized 80% straw and 20% horse poo, it was spawned with 4 qaurts rye. Homie put 1 quart on bottom then a layer of straw then another qt etc. until he got to the top and finished it with his last qt of rye wich was on the 14th, two days later the top was completely colinzed but homie can not see below the top layer.

So when would it be safe to assume that the whole container was colinized?

Give it atleast a week after spawning I'd say, go for a week and a couple days if you want to be safe.

according to the teks and what i've read around here, homie should have mixed up the spawn evenly throughout the poo/straw and not layered it.

True, but homie thinks the layered might just work. He has heard from some that this is a way it can work successfully. You think not?

But on the other note a little time never hurt any colinization.

I am curious to know other opionons on the layering technique.

Layering should work IMO. Especially if you did something like:

Spawn
Substrate
Spawn
Substrate
Spawn
Substrate

That means that your spawn is colonizing the straw from all throughout the substrate just like if it were crushed up and spread all through it. It's just doing it in a more orderly fashion.

I believe in atleast one of the straw teks someone said to do layering. I'm going to search for the link.

i layer my 68 liter bins as follows....
straw
spawn
straw
spawn
straw
spawn
straw

so there is 3 layers of spawn each with at least a quart...colonization times are almost always under a 2 weeks

More spawn, quicker it colonizes. I've found 10% spawn stored at high 70's, low 80's got me about 10-12 days colonization.

it will definitely work to layer but you have to realize that that if your top spawn layer is thinner than the rest and it is fully colonized, the others might not be fully colonized because they are thicker. you get what i'm saying? a few extra days after the top layer is colonized should be enough to get the whole thing colonized throughout i think. the main reason to mix up spawn and substrate is to get an even colonization...that is, when the top layer is colonized the rest is colonized too because there is an even mix of spawn/substrate. your way will work though.

Thanks for the info.

He is going to leave it in their for another day and then case it. It looks like it is fully colonized, and any tiny spots that are not colonized will due so while the casing is colonizing, correct?

Homie has tried to mix the straw and spawn evenly but was very unsuccessfully at doing so with rye, millet worked better IHO.
