is tyvek absolutly neccessary?
    #3249654 - 10/12/04 10:00 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

or would leaving the lids on and putting tape over the holes proved enough protection ? I don't understand how airborne would get in if the holes are taped??

The reason we use tyvek is to allow C02 to escape of Myc.
Myc requires fresh oxy and it needs to ride itself of C02

Myc growing in heavy CO2 will grow very slowly. At a certian point it will stop all toghter. But with a constant air exchange you can look foward to very nice colinization times

If it were just a matter of sealing the jar up then yes you would be right.

Depends on the method and substrate, really.

PF cakes do just fine with tape over the wholes. Remove the tape when the myc is established and the dry verm layer prevents nasties.

Grains on the other hand won't fair so well.

swik doesn't use tyvek at all. Polyfil stuffed in a 1/4" hole in the lid works well.

The problem I had woth polyfill was during shaking the polyfill would get damp and the moisture would wick up to the outside of the lid. Contaims would wick back down and fuck my jars. Didn't happen all the time but enought to make the switch to Tyvek. Besides the gas exchange rate in a quart jar using tyvek is the main reason I can get quart jars fully colinized in 9-12 days

With polyfill plugs it took up to 4 weeeks.

so just tyvek and no tape is fine? IS one hole on top (nail size) enough for gas exchange?

All you need is the tyvek and the screw on band. Just throw the steel lid out.

Poke your needle right thru the tyvek. Have tape ready, when you pull the needle out tape hole up.

No, see.. Tyvek is a microfilter. It allows gasses to pass, but not contams. The only hole in the Tyvek should be from inoculaton, and a small piece of tape should be put over it immediately afterwards.

victimlesstribe, The point is that with tyvek, you don't need holes for gas exchange - That material is gas permeable. Just cover the inoc. hole and you should be set. (please correct me if I am wrong)

Fucknuckle, I definitely will try to get my dawg to try tyvek. hell, he's taken enough from the PO already. But what am I gonna do with that lifetime supply of polyfil?  :mushroom2:

What tape should I use?

On my cakes there is only alu foil, two layers.
1st layer with 4 inoc. holes
second layer without any.

this and a nice applied verm layer keeps away the contams.

i use tyvek because my substrate got wet after pressure cooking. dont tape your jars, let your jars breathe. i still use the the band and jar lids but drilled 9 5/8" holes into it for extra protection from wetness. tyvek is godsend.

In PF tek tyvek and polyfill are kinda pointless. As long as you dont incubate in a pile of garbage.
