Jar Tyvek Question?
    #3249273 - 10/12/04 10:56 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I've been using rye with tyvek and a 1/4" hole in the lid. Does that sound like a big enough hole for gas exchange? My substrate has been a little wet looking in there. I wonder if using the rings with just tyvek would dry things up a little? Thanks!!

I have been using tyvek and the band only for along time

Tyvek is made to allow gas exchange but no water exchange. That is it soul purpose

You will lose ZERO water

So if my jars are looking soggy towards the end of colonization, would you say I should drain for longer maybe? I have been:
soaking for 24 hours
simmering for 30 minutes
rinsing
draining for 15 minutres
g2g

Thanks for any input!!

I don't simmer by the clock
I simmer until the grain just starts to split

To drain my grains I spread them out on a towel until they are about an inch thick and leave it for an hour or so.

I am not saying my way is the right way, But it works right everytime.

Yes it sound like you are not letting it drain enough. Besides when grains are heaped up in a pile in a strainer the grains in the middle are still very wet.

Err... Gaas exchange but not water exchange?

Is not evaporated water vapor a gas?

I am telling you the truth

The reason Dupont invented Tyvek was to make a moisture barrier for home exteriors.
They put it under the siding or under the brickwork. It keeps out water but lets gas exchange. Once the rest of the world figured out how wonderful this stuff was it ended up everywhere.

It is designed to let out gas and not let in water

That is what is does.

It will let out water vapor over time though..not water droplets, but water vapor. Not to say that you can't use Tyvek with just the ring and not have it dry out your substrate to much..
