Jars exploding?? Quick Qu'
    #3247527 -

Ok, if I were to seal up a jar in the PC with no holes in the lid, would it explode?

What if I were to loosen the jars a little would the same problem arise?

yes the pressure inside due to the moisture already in the jars would explode.

because water heated makes steam.. if steam has no way to go is will go boom!!

No they will not explode! If that was the case people would not be able to pc food in jars ,like garden tomatoes and so on!
Think about shit ,a little common sense will take you a long way!
To keep your jars from sealing turn them(lids) upside down then poke your holes ,that way the rubber seal is not touching the jars rim/lid!
Got it homey! :smirk:

Ok, but common sense will take one as far as they know. I dont know what people do with their garden tomatoes, it was a simple question. Because people have had exploding jars and I thought the reason was because they were completly sealed with no escape of gases. so your telling me there is no way I can get a jar to explode in a PC?

i would think the tomatoes and such dont explode cause ey are filled to the top of the jar when sealed. There isnt any room inside the jar for steam to build up.

I bet if you filled a jar with a littlewater, and did your best to make it totally sealed for high pressure, you could make them bang. But then again, canning jars are very sturdy and i dont think a pressure cooker would force enough heat in there to cuase the pressure to rise high enough...

The force exerted is evenly distributed, heat is of no issue of course. Jars break because #1 they are flawed. GL guys and don't sweat it.

The reason jars won't explode in a pc with the lids screwed on tight is...........Inside the sealed pc both inside and outside jar the pressure is the same. There by the jar can not explode. Now if you were to take a sealed jar and place it in a open pan of boiling water the jar would explode, crack or other wise break. The reason it would break this way is the pressure in the open air is way lower that the pressure inside the boiling jar.

If you were to open a pc right after you took it of the burner. There is a very good chace the jars will break. The temp inside the jar would be over 212 degs and the water inside would rupture into steam and cause the jar to break.

I have always just screwed my lids on tight when PCing but I never open it up until it completely cools.
