colonization on rye taking too long
    #3248661 - 10/12/04 08:54 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

4 quart rye jars were knocked up 9 days ago and looks like only 30% has colonized thus far. They are in the tub incubator at about 82-86. Magash said his jars were done in 9 days. His tek was precisely followed. Is there something that can be done to speed growth?

Also, the tub is crowded and pf jars are stacked on top of rye jars, is this a problem? I don't see why it would be, the jars on top are still getting the same environmental conditions as the ones on bottom.
Thanks.

mine went pretty slow as well, i nocked on 9/29 and they're still not done, some are closer than others though.

p.s. magash knows what he's doing... age of spores might be a factor, i was expecting at most 2 weeks, but it looks like it going to take a little over 2.

I just read two posts saying that they inocc their jars with 3-5 cc's. The jars that this bud of mine's sister's cousin's daughter twice removed did were only inocc'ed with 2.5 cc's like Magash's tek. How much did you use?

Maybe I'm missing some vital step...here was the procedure:

-soak rye 24 hours (the ones done were more like 36)
-drain jars fill, shake, and drain again
-simmer 45 min
-pour shit-ton of water through rye
-fill jars with shake room and pc
-let cool overnight and inocc next day
-sittin in incubator hardly colonizin at all..wtf?

Are you shaking them up? You should be shaking when you see substantial colonization...usually around day 5 or so.

No I have no need to shake them after inoculation.

I use 5 cc's per quart and shake the piss out of them right after Inoculation. about 5 days into it the entire jar is covered in new Myc. I mean every grain. My quart jars are done in 9-11 days everytime. At 86 degs of course.

So to say it again I only shake them once.

Two holes were drilled: one large hole for fresh air, and one small for inocc. The inocc hole was taped after jar inocc was finished and put a tyvek filter over the lid, then screwed on the ring.

9-11 days huh? That's tight, I guess the only thing that can change next time is doubling the amount of spore solution used and possibly making a much darker syringe. I know there's been debate on clear or dark syringes but I don't see why more spores wouldn't be better.

Well I'm one who likes dark syringes so Yeah the syringes I used were pretty dark but I've had the same results using vendor syringes (maybe add a day or two at most).

Make sure the rye is organic and try again. Should you have the same results pm me and we'll go threw every step till we get ya going right

i accidently hardcore boiled my rye for a short period of time, and i accidently let the pressure get up to 25psi for a short while in the pc.

could this be the reason that NONE of my rye is showing signs of contams/myc?
is it possible to over cook/pc the rye so that nothing will grow on it?

is your grain mushing together at the bottom of the jar or do the grains still have integrity. If its a mush cake you overcooked -I advise throughing that shit out cause its a good contam. environment. as well as the mycelium has less of a chance of colinizing. Make sure you got the right water to grain ratio and dont overcook to the point of starchey goo oozing out and makeing a goo ball.
