New ways to do jars?
    #3248491 - 10/12/04 08:22 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I live in upper canada , and it gets -40 degrees at times. Would this be cold enough to completely kill anything in my jars?

Welcome to the shroomery

Good question

I once did a few experiements in freezing to kill all the baddies. It worked faily well. What I did was to freeze the jars and let them thaw out for 24 hours and refrezze and re thaw again . I did this 3 times.

I got about 60% of the jars to make it all the way thru to birth

But my freezer only goes down to 12 degs . So you may do better

I think you might still get bad spores and such that will survive the cold. You need to germinate them then kill them. Spores are every where even -40 deg..

Freezing doesn't kill mould/contaminantes etc, it simple makes them dormant to later "wake up" so to speak when thawed.

Yes that is why I recomended To alow them to thaw out for 24 hours in between trips to the freeze. Giving all spores a chance to germinate. By doing this thru 3 cycles it may work.

Cell walls have a very hard time surviving freezing. But endospores are tuff bastards.
