Why PC with oven bags?
    #3247617 - 10/12/04 02:37 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

So, can someone help me here. Why do we PC oven bags rather than tossing them in the oven for 2 hours at, say, 400? THanks!

Because the oven isn't nearly as efficient as a PC when it comes to sterilization. The temps aren't high enough, and an oven would dry out your substrate.

i prefer pasteurizing (in the oven) my spawnbags (with poo) rather than sterilizing them (in the PC).

By pasteurizing i can then follow a spawning procedure with less contam issues.

So we could also spawn to a bag of pasteurized poo/straw. Then spawn this to a container of poo for casing. Is this what is referred to as "super spawning"?
I guess I don't understand why one would use grain in a bag if you could just pasteurize poo. THanks!

of course you can do this.
i recently moved on to poo and i don't se WHY it's difficult???
finally,it's so damn easy!!!!
you just need to do a few more steps

it needs more time but it's not more difficult

Yeah, I'm finding poo is incredibly friendly, even to newbs!
I really like pasteurizing rather than sterilizing.
I was just wondering what the benefit of spawning to a bag of poo would be; just to create more spawn material easily?  'K.  I'm just trying to figure this approach out before I go off and fuck up several quarts of bagged poo.

I think it's like roasting a turkey in the oven at 350 for 15-30min. per pound. A 12lb. turkey would be done in 4-5hrs. but that same turkey done in a PC would be done in 90-120min. I could be wrong here but thats the way I see it. As far as Poo pasturization is better IMHO too.

As long as the substrate is wet, it's internal temperature will never reach that above the boiling point of water. The surrounding air temperature in an oven is not the temperature of the items being baked. Stick a meat thermometer in your substrate while baking it and you'll see. Of course dry substrate will reach higher temperatures, but wet heat is better at killing the nasties than dry heat and you would have to wet your substrate after baking (and of course there's the possibility that you'll burn your substrate). A pressure cooker raises the boiling point of water in the substrate and hence raises the internal temperatures possible without the substrate drying out.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.
