This book is awesome. I had never read D.H. Lawrence until now and I keep asking myself why! Holy shit, what a great author. Just had to share that and see if there are any fans of him here.

SUCK SUCK SUCK. I hated Lawrence when I read him. Maybe I should go back. What are his other books? Is one, "The Rainbow?" I know "Women in Love" bored me out of my skull, too. But, he did get banned for sex content. Maybe I should check him out again....

Yes! I thought it was excellent. I read it years ago, but some of the images are still with me. Like Morel eating his bacon by the fire, catching the drippings. Outstanding book...

Why did you hate him? I can see if you read him in high school that you may have been bored. But I think he is delicious!
And here are the fiction books he wrote:
The white peacock (1911) The trespasser (1912) Sons and lovers (1913) The rainbow (1915) Women in love (1920) The lost girl (1920) Aaron's rod (1922) Kangaroo (1923) The boy in the bush (1924) St Mawr (1925) The plumed serpent (Quetzalcoatl) (1926) Lady Chatterley's lover (1928) The escaped cock (The man who died) (1928/1929) The virgin and the gipsy (1930) Mr Noon part I and part II (1984)

You are right, his writing creates very real images. Like Morel's red lips against his black beard, and Mrs. Morel holding the baby Paul to the red sunset in the field with her heart aching.

I was studying in England at the time and was spending far more time partying than studying. I was 21. Though I remember having the same sort of visceral reaction that I had to Viriginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway" or much of Gertrude Stein. I think it stems from my utter disgust with the characters' need to exist within the social norms and roles of the day. I'm pretty sure that's what frustrated me. After so many pages, I simpy didn't give a fuck, regardless of how well it was written. Now, "The Rockinghorse Winner" is a stand-out Lawrence piece.

I'll have to read that next. Thanks.
And isn't that something that frustruates all of us? Trying to draw a line of how far outside society's norms I will openly or even covertly go has always been a big struggle of mine. Of course, I am only a quarter of the way through the book so far, so we may be talking apples and oranges.
Thanks for your input though! and good luck with your kitty coming back.

Thanks! But, for my poor Lucy, I do not hold much hope for her now. These things happen, tho. If you don't let them out to play, they won't be happy. So, better to have them be happy and take the risk, at least that's how I feel about it. Happy reading.
