Treasures in my Schools courtyard
    #3244724 - 10/11/04 07:42 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

While day dreaming out the window today in 4th period, I was surprised when I realized I was looking at a patch of what I believed to be Amanita muscarias growing. I came back after school and realized another patch of them in the courtyard had already been picked. I guess somebody else in my school knows this little spot. What a pleasant surprise. You find what you're looking for at the most unexpected places and times.

How common is it for people to eat these? I've heard some nasty things about them. Unpleasant trip, etc. Although when they're cooking in the oven damn do they smell good.

the stipe is too yellow...
and the concentric cirles
on the base are not pronounced
enough... I may be wrong..I've never
found A. Muscaria my self.. wait for other
responses,,, It may be... ????Nofindum...

I'm with nofind_um

Yellow stems and yellow warts are bad news.

I think they _are_ A. Muscaria. Muscaria is a very common species in this region, and these specimens look just like the ones that grow 200ft from my house at the moment
I admit, the stems do look yellowish, but I think that's due to the fact that these photos were taken inside where the light is always much warmer than outside.

Amanita flavoconia looks similar to A. muscaria but has a yellow stem and yellow veil remnants.

Upon furthur investigation I think it probably is Amanita muscaria subsp. flavivolvata, a variety of Fly agaric with a yellow veil.

Please excuse my initial caution; eating A. muscaria will make you sick, but eating a misidentified Amanita could kill you, and I would hate to see somebody die while trying to get high from eating poisonous mushrooms.
