Anyone else Wireless?
    #3218566 - 10/05/04 02:26 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

whas up peoples, long time no chat... whas up felix, hongomon, if you birds still hanging around. just curious if anyone else is going wireless, and what kind of software they are hooking up. I just bought mine today. Now I am getting 115 kbs, which is good for surfing the web, about the same as internet cafes, and I got service that is about 4 or 5 cents per minute, but I am working on getting unlimited monthly service for 30 dollars a month.

I am having trouble with the cell phone though, my thai sim card doesn't want to make international calls, anyways, whos out there and wireless? Peace.

do you use your wireless connection as a phone also? How much do you pay for you service. I would get cable too, but that just reached hawaii last year, and won't come to my place in thailand until I get a phone line. I'm not sure whether it is kilobits or kilobytes, I surfing faster than 56 k. whatever that k stands for is what I got, about 114k

Yeah, I've had 2.4Ghz wireless for about 6 months now. It was only choice I had(don't ask). Speed is upto 1.5Mbps up/down but because I'm pretty far away from the antenna, I only get about 500Kbps down and 750Kbps up. It's really pretty much limited to people with line of site. It has absolutely no affect on my linksys 802.11g on channel 8 nor microsoft 802.11g on channel 6.

It's really not all that IMO. I finally made it out of the waiting list for ADSL and am very happy with that. ADSL is so much more reliable. Not to mention 40Mbps down and 3Mbps up. I think I haven't reached over 50% capacity even with 8 computers downloading upgrades and stuff, except for speed tests. Go ADSL, it's better.

make sure all of you secure your personal private networks. here is just a few security tips.

    1) Do not broadcast the SSID.
(this makes it harder for newbies to find your wireless signal.)
    2) Turn WEP on and change the key every couple of weeks.
(this makes it harder for wireless kiddies to see your actual data and sniff out passwords, credit cards, etc.)
    3) Change the default password!
(this is the first thing all newbs try to make you vulnerable, also change it to something thats not a dictionary word that combines numbers and symbols.
    4) Change the default channel ID and SSID.
(Change these will let people who can see your network know that your not a mark and up on your security, but they shouldn't see much since your not broadcasting your SSID :/ )
    5) Enable MAC address control. (this verifies that your network cards are the only one's connecting to the router)

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

woah now, thas alot for the first day don't you think... I really did'nt understand a word you said, but I get the jist of what your saying, In my own words I would have said, Man, be careful, because some crazy fuckers have hooked up ham radio software to laptops to screen your wireless signal for information. Which is what you were saying Socrates? Anyways, I'll be careful, but for now thas all I can do. Since you know so much about what I'm doing you mind awnsering a couple questions? Good, I have two serious problems now, first my computer phone software is interfering with my wireless gprs connection, I don't know how, so I just disabled all software relating to my computer phone, and now it works. any ideas?

Second I have no idea how to configure my outlook express mail to my server, can you point me in the right direction? Thanks

Being on the internet while still in bed is nice. Why doesnt everything go wireless? On one of my trips i realized that itd be easier if everything was wireless.
