Does rust (be it on grain jar lids or growing chamber racks) have an effect on mycelia? If so, how?

Are you saying you have never had rust on your jar lids, or you have but it has never been a problem (in terms of contams)?

im a noob keep that in mind.

rust i beleve is caused by a bacteria eating away at the metal, i personally have never had rust on my jar lids or anything. But if there was rust there i would tossem.

because if you think about it.. if u step on a rusty nail .. what happens..? You have to get a shot for tetnas or somtin. that would basically be the same as eating a shroom with "rust" on it , or even a power from the rust.

i would say toss all that are close or in contact with the rust.

No. Rust is oxidation of metal. It happens with presence of oxidizers. Common oxidizers include oxygen, acids, etc.. Water and air have will cause oxidation, but with other eloctrolytes, the process is accelerated.

Most jar lids have a thin coating that protects from contact with oxidizers. Coatings can be in form of alloy layer, paint or polymers. If the coating is lost, it'll rust through the opening then from inside out. It takes awhile, though.

Most metals used for water related applications are made out of stainless steel. It's stain resistent but not immuned. Some are painted or have chrome layer, though chrome is not very common(expensive). Best bet is to use stuff with polymer coating or made from plastic in your pods.

I have had rust on my jar lids, and never had any problem.

I would go buy some new jars if you have rust.

So does rust have a negative effect when in contact with mycelia?

I had the same problem as you, so I got some of those plastic storage lids in the canning section of Wal-Mart for like $2.50 for eight of em, and they hold up in the PC just fine and they will never rust. They have em for regular and wide mouth to. You just have to drill holes in them instead of poking. Although poking would probably work if you were carful as plastic tends to crack easily.

I put rusty nails in my mouth all the time in the summer when I'm helping work on any random roof.  I haven't died yet.  I'd say unless you are swallowing a heavily rust covered mushroom, you will be fine.

The rust shouldn't hurt your mycelium, but don't let it touch your mycelium if you can get it away without damaging the myc network.

Buy some new lids . The rust is "not likely" , but can aid in nasties forming in myc jars . Rust is a form of bacteria (also effected by O2-oxidizer) , not one that competes with myc for nutes in a substrate , but none the less is not what we are trying to grow here  Also the risk of cutting oneself is another factor to consider (tetanus if not innoced for it ). Lids are cheap and easy to obtain . And remeber the old saying of "Cleanliness is next to Godliness "
My bio also has a prose from Aliester Crowley that mentions this basic fact that most definetly applies to home mush growing .
Good Luck

Would you please show a source backing up this statement?
It goes against what most of us learn in school, and that is rust is due to oxidation of metals, not a bacteria.
I know there are many rust fungus, but rust on a metal lid is not one of them.

Sorry I misstated that .
I have read and seen on several films about old ship recks , and scientists have discoverd that rust colonies contain bacteria that consumes the rust itself , thus aiding in the decay of the ships .
So RUST may contain bacteria that is consuming the rust, and could possibly produce right conditions for other forms of bacteris to form and thrive . So either , iether ,or ,it is still not wise IMHO to use rusty lids, get new ones .

Rght. Just a little more in detail about it... Bacteria eating rust, i don't know much about... But what rust will do is, it'll cause deformities on the structure of the metal(lid) and will hold stagnant water, which will become a habitat for many nasty things.

Trip, I'm not contradicting... just adding.
