I really am just starting to research this one. Can anyone give me a link to some bag info/teks? And, even if you use oven bags, you still PC them, right, not put them in the oven? Sorry. nOOb here. THanks all!

I am not a fan of bags, so here is my 2 pennies.
Bags for one cost alot. A set of 10 bags from MycoSupply will cost you 7$.
A pack of 12 jars will cost you 7$. You can re-use them all you want.
If you are gonna buy them, buy from these guys. They are the best =)

A friend of mine tells me you can take oven bags and cut off the top of two liter bottles very close to the cap (just the part the cap screws to thats very thick) and cut a large hole in the top of the cap. Then unscrew the lid (you have two peices that screw together now) and push the bag (once filled with substrate) top through the bottom part of the two peices you have (not the cap, the other part) and fold the bag down over it. Then screw the cap on with the bag in the threads. Now you got a big hole in top..stuff a nice chunk of polyfil in there and PC like that. You can inoculate through the polyfil. Also try using jar rings as spacers around the bags or wrapping them in towels to keep them from touching the bare metal. Some people let them but my friend says not to. He also says you should put a thingy on top of the bags to hold them down and make sure they don't puff up and block the holes.

Thank you. There is a pictorial on that over at mycotopia. It seems kinda dumb to G2G to 5 quarts when one could just use a bag. Just simpler, y'know? Where might one buy the nice polyproplene bags that would work well for this sort of thing?
Cheers.

I've done hundreds of bags and find them way more convenient! Sorry didn't mean any disrespect to MycoSupply as they provide a very valuable service to our community. I like to help the little guy as much as possible so they can spend the money they saved on other necessary things at MycoSupply or another sponser.

how/where do you inoculate on those bags you linked hyphae? And how do you patch the hole assuming you use a syringe?

Micropore tape and is used also as filter a patch after making 2-3 small holes. You can thank Mycota (6T) for that tip wherever he is God bless his soul!!!!

Which size would you recommend to fit something like 5 quarts of rye off that site? I was thinking the 12x24 but if I can get away with the smallest one that would be cool
I tried myco bags before with the filter patch and got contams on all of them. Poor handling. It was tough, clipping the bags shut, then PCing them, then sealing them after PCing them? And I injected directly into the side of the bag then put a bandaid over it, never wiped it down with alcohol first. I also didn't do the best job with the impulse sealer..its a little tricky to get. I hadn't really looked up how to do them correctly though and now I'm having another go at them with some oven bags (fitted with 2 liter tops and polyfil like I described above) as we speak so hopefully these will go better. These would be much easier then making jars, make up two 5 quart bags (or do you think this is to much to put into a bag?) per PC run. I can only fit 9 quart jars in there now. Could fit many bags into the incubator easier. Then just split it up into casings. Easy to break up before casing too. Seems like the way to go to me.
Is micro pore tape self healing? Do you swap it with alcohol before injecting? I never did before but started swabbing all my jars and everything I inject, seems like good measure?

scatmanrav that IMHO is too much much like doing too large a tube which doing straw. The cores can get anaerobic bacterial contamination from lack of gas exchange. Not to mention it like putting all your eggs in one basket type thing

Hey - when you use those bags I assume you cut a small hole in the bag, put the Micropore tape over the hole, fill with grain , pc, inoculate or g2g, and seal the bag shut? Does the tape stay on well while being pc'd?
Thanks!!

im wondering the same thing. And why is it you must seal after pc'ing? Seems like an easy way to get contams..

I'm wondering wether the bags are going to used for a casing , or if it going to be spawn, or what substrate is being used. I think those are important factors when using bags.
Perosonally, I can't imagine going wrong with bulk rye in mycobags, then cased. Impulse sealers are dirt cheap off ebay, and IF your growing a lot of fruit then I don't think that even the price of bags from mycosupply would be too bad.

So how much should I put it in then? At the most? And which sized bags of them should I go with? 8x12 work?

mycelium needs to breathe. if there is no filter in the bag, then make a few small holes and put some filter (tyvek or something) over them to not let the dust get in

hey there!
currently i am experimenting using the DIY spawnbags una did a pictoral to ( can be found here )
well, so far i must say that their customizability and price is very nice and they offer a great alternative to jars since of their volumina.
i havent got colonisation jet, due to nocking them up yesterday, but if i can report 100% success ill let the shroomery know for sure.
btw here a pic from una, for everyone curious how they'r looking like: -jup, thats polyfill as an air filter.
well ill keep u updated. peace ohm

hey, just shot up another bag with some multispore. basically ur doing the same as me, i just wonder how u seal the REAR end of the bag, i usually just twist it with a wire and then seal it with a lighter.
works quite nice for me.
btw, did u notice how ur oven bags say "delicious family meals" ? hehe anyway, peace ohm and lots of love to una!
