Jar problem
    #3245393 - 10/12/04 12:02 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I ordered some pre-sterilized substrate jars off of the internet(because I dont have the equipment to sterilize) and recieved them today. After innoculating one jar, I realized that the jar opening is smaller than the bottom. I had planned on removing the cake after it was colonized and dunking but due to the shape of the jar it's impossible. Whats the best way to remove the cake without damaging it? Also for dunking...is it ok to pour water directly into the jar?

Breaking the glass, or just crumble it up and case it. There really is not much you can do. The cake will shrink during colonization, it may shrink enough to squeeze out. But dont count on it!

Crumble and case em. You'll get more shrooms and can use your jars again (not to mention no broken glass to deal with)

It depends on how much tapering. Cake will shrink a bit. Maybe 1/16th of an inch off the glass. So you might be able to coax it out if it's not that much tapered. If not, you can sterilize a knife and cut it/crumble it and use it for a casing like Scatmanrav says. I do agree not to break the glass. Just way to messy.

Good Luck.

BTW, all you need is a large pot/lid and a stove to sterilize the PF jars. You can do it, I believe in you!
