Mycobags w/ poo and strw?
    #3245158 - 10/11/04 11:21 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Has anyone used mycobags using straw and poo from myco supply? I am interested in possily using this method or would you think rye or millet would be a better choice for this? I eventually want to make cases with mabye verm/coco coir or verm/peet moss/lime. Any input would be greatly appriciated. The more I know the more I grow!

Best advise would be buy the jars, WBS and supplies and go that route. If your sticking with the bags Id say the grain based ones are best. Use coir for casing.

I have 24 1/2pint jars colonizing with brf/verm at the moment and also 10 quart jars with popcorn recently inoculated. I was thinking of spawning a few jars into mycobags, mabye the ones from "high mountain compost". And then I would case them. Are you saying if I do this I should use only coco coir and no vermaculite?

You can use straight coir or mix with verm, they both work well. You could buy high mountain compost but why not just get some hay and manure from local sources then make your own bulk substrate for much cheaper.

I haven't a clue where to buy poo or staw from without looking fishy. Also, it seems a little hard to pasteurize, mabye not. I am just a little worried about messing up on the pasturizing part. Also, I don't have a sealer for the mycobags and they are expensive too.

Pasturizing isnt hard at all just dont let it get over 180 degrees and with what you have allready colonising you can just use tubs.
You can get hay and poo from wallmart....its really easy if you dont make it hard :smirk:

i found it easier for me to pasteurize in the oven.
i tried the pasteurizing in a pot but i failed twice.
so i tried the oven method (6 hours at 65C) and succeeded:-) my casings with poo/hay are now pinning:-)

Yes i do it in the oven also in a deep pan with foil covering it at 150 for 1.5 or 2 hrs...I used to use oven bags but a deep pan is better...
I use my fieldpiece temp headmeter to make shure it doesnt get over 180 degrees..

Doing it in a deep pan sounds like a good idea. Although most teks say to only cook for three hours? If I do get poo and straw from mabye a home depot or something, will I have to worry about pH at all? Should I add lime or something?
