found these growing under some fir trees in the grass. They were very dirty because they seemed to grow from underneath the ground . The stalk is very short and stubby. The texture is hard and rigid. The smell is nothing appealing.
I was just wondering what kind of mushroom this is because i'm finding them quite a bit and they get to be huge. I found one that was 8" across and the stem was 3" thick. thanks.

Another thought is one of the various species of Russula or Lactarius. Try breaking the stem to see if it's fibrous or not. Russulas (and Lactarii) will break like a piece of chalk, with no fibers.

Happy mushrooming!
