Perlite PMP pumps necessary?
    #3244108 - 10/11/04 07:07 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I've seen lots of posts encouraging the use these air pumps in collaboration with perlite. but the perlite tek doesn't mention anything about these set-ups. I thought I could just fill my terrarium with 2" of perlite and add 1" of distilled water w/ a 1:20 water:H2O2 ratio and the humidity levels would be fine. What's all this about a pump?

Perilite is for humidity. Thats what the Perilite Tek is for. The PMP is for complete automation, humidity and fresh air exchange which are the two most important things for mushies. If you just use perilite, you'll need to fan 5-8 times a day. Some say you can fan less but IMO, thats how much you need without automated fresh air (ie air pump, cool mist).

pumps add air circulation/ fresh air, and you wont have to fan as often if you have a few holes in the lid( the pump and bubble stones), plus i think that circulating water is less likely to go bad than standing water. and you can do go more like 10 parts water and 1 part peroxide. perlite with nothing else is not going to give you ideal coditions like the almighty pmp.

bubbling air through water creates its own amount of humidity also due to gas in contact with water in large surface area.. I don't know how much. But its got to be better than wafting all the dry stuff in when you open it to fan.

I'm getting a pump very soon, But I was wondering that as my tub is already all laid out with stuff in, should it be ok to stick just a beaker of water with an airstone in the centre of the perlite?

you should be able to put to bubbler in the perlite, the beaker is like a shield? that would probably work, but i use two that go the length of the container, so im not sure if one in the middle is going to give you enough air, you might still have to fan, i use two and i still fan. also hydroton is going to work so much better that after messing with perlite you will want to switch.

Okay.. I'll help you guys figure out if enough air is being used.

You need to look up the technical information of your pump. If it's not in the manual, look it up on the internet. It'll be in liters per hour.

A small aquarium tank like profil 1000 for 5-10 gal tank puts out of 30L/hr.

You also want to look up how big your rubbermaid( or any other container). If it's liters, you are in luck, if in gallons, multiply the gallons by 3.875. The answer will be in liters.

ideally, you'd want exchange 2-3 volumes per hour. Minimum should be 1 volume. So if you have that profile 1000, you should be fine for a 30L pod. Here's the catch, though. Perlite/geolite/cakes will take up space. So you can probably run that pump with 50L pod.

If you are shopping for the pump, expensive is not always better. It is, but not sizewise. A $50 pump designed for deep water use(upto 8 feet) will put out as much air as profile 2900 which is 40L/hr capacity(I think it's 40). So try to look it up before you spend a lot of money on pumps. It's probably the second most expensive equipment you'll buy next to a PC.

Happy hunting everyone!

Sam
