Heres a picture

I thinkl a bug got to it. Isnt there something i can do with the roots to make it push up another button.

what is the proper way of doing that?

if the root is okay maybe you could cut the button off and hope something new grows? if theres anything you consider edible left of the button, maybe make some pedro syrup and eat that too. Not the best suggestion, but beats throwin it out?

and maybe hydro is right, could still make it.

Just a question, is it in a plastic or clay pot? Soil in clay pots dries faster. When you cut the button make sure to leave some green tissue. It's sad, but it might make it.

If theres still some green around the bottom and its hard like a normal growing one, I suggest decapitating it at this point, but make sure there are still some areoles on the green part, you now the places where the tufts come out. Do not water, I repeat do not water. It will callous over. Hopefully you'll have some new growth out of the areoles, if not then hopefully the roots will send out a pup or two. I've had several Trichocereus peruvianus die at the top from being to close to my halides, and they always seem to recover and put out new growth, usually two more columns. Good Luck!

I can attest to the hardiness of cactus, my parents had non active ones get plucked out behind our yard and then deep frozen in a northern midatlantic, and still came back in the spring.  Cactus's are survivalists
