Hi, my first post on this forum. Great site by the way.
Anyhow....i just started growing for my first time and im having a problem keeping my terrerium warm. Right now, my temperature probe says its about 52 degrees f in there. The outside room is probably around 75 degrees. Everything i read says the terrerium should be around 75-85 degreees.
so, i tried putting a heating pad in there, but that didnt seem to help one bit, all it did was evaporate the moisture. anyone got any ideas on how to keep it up to temp?

Welcome to the shroomery
Try a warm water in a 2 liter Only thing is you will have to change it out every 4 hours or so.
Question??? Why are you temps so low?? Is your chamber not in doors/

thats exactly what i'm wondering, it's indoors, in a pretty warm room in the house. Obviously the water inside will lower temps. I'm guessing the size of the terrerium has something to do with it.
It's actually a custom acrylic plexiglass deal i made. mesuring about 48 inches long, 24 wide, 24 tall.

I know the floor in my room gets maaad cold all the time. Maybe you could insulate it with some styrofoam underneath, or just get it up off the floor all together.

I filled a pint sized jar with warm water and put a fish tank heater in it. It works to raise the temp in my fruiting chamber.

Thats probably what i'll end up doing.
I put a pan with boiling water in it into the terrarium, and the temperature probe read about 42 degrees after. So...it's basically saying the more heat i add to this thing, the colder its getting. i know what 42 degrees feels like, and just touching the side of it i know for a fact it's nowhere near that cold. So i guess my problem is my temp probe obviously. Which is kind of surprising, because it's a high tech $150 model. My only guess is water is condensing on it, and throwing the reading way off....but then again it's supposed to be able to read liquid temps.

Wow there is no way a terrarium in a 75 degree room is going to be 52 degree inside I'll tell you right now! Go get a real thermometer and check it again. One possibility was your water that you placed in there was fresh out of the tap that possibly could lower it some but the waters temp will acclimate to room temp it just takes time (24hrs.) I agree get it up off the floor too. You want your terrariums temp to be 74-77F. which is optimal 70-80 will work too if you can't get it optimal. GL and welcome!

Perlite evaporating water will lower temperature.. something to do with some 'latent heat' nonsense my science teacher would babble on about before I fell asleep. But not that much..
I'm using a heat pad underneath the tank on a timer 15 minutes in every hour, which is heating the perlite layer keeping the tank at 70-75 F (damn you Americans - got ME using farenheit now as well!), and seems to be causing it to evaporate more water.
All that said though I'm having a shit time trying to get the bastards to pin. Will sort out fish pump stuff and hygrometer this week, and hopefully see if I've gone wrong somewhere.
