Coco Coir cased Vertical straw columns...
    #3205623 - 10/02/04 12:52 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I have experiance cultivating P. Oysters. I use 12 inch diameter plastic air ducting rolls available from F.P. to spawn 2 foot columns. I like how the P. Oyster fruits and utilizes it's croping surface (a 3D-cylinder presents a much larger surface area that a
1D square.)

I wanted to use the basis of this technique with a species that requiers a caseing. A long while back I heard of people useing coco coir as a sucsessfull caseing. Could this be cased on a vertical column and possibly held in place with netting of a 1 inch diameter.

If the caseing would hold the potential benifits could be great. 2X the surface area 2X the water absorbtion. What do you think???
(say fish netting)

Coco coir is not the optimum casing material for P. cubensis IMO. It dries out pretty fast and is colonized and digested by mycelium which easily leads to overlay.
Better use it in conjunction with peat or a mixture of peat and vermiculite. Don't forget to add limestone flour for buffering the pH.

Coco coir sucks as a casing. The mycelium just eats it up and the whole thing overlays in no time with a good strain. There are dozens of pictures of "successful" trays on here which show heavy overlay with coco coir. Yeah, those trays will fruit, but if you want the big yields of 2-4 lbs/sq.ft. you'd better use peat moss, vermiculite, or some other non-nutritive casing mix.

Yea really, coir always worked fine for me. I never had overlay problems that werent due to improper patching or late fruiting. I think the reason why there are allot of overlayed casings with coir is because most people use coir since it sucks  ??? Where did you get your info that peat casings yield more? If you want big flushes make compost and lay it on thick.

Back to the thread, Dont waste your time, construcitng a log like that would be a waste of effort. Casings are extremly space effecient, rooms are square.

Coco coir makes an awesome addition to your compost, straw, manure, etc. It's a great bulk substrate, but as I've said for well over a year now, it sucks as a casing material, too many nutes. Peat/verm is much better for casings, and as anno pointed out, don't forget to lime it to buffer the ph.

As far as casings I'm a peat/verm/buffer guy all the way it is the best microclimate out there hands down. I've seen plenty of perfectly colonized coir/verm casings from pro's who know when to initiate so coir is still a viable alternative to peat in my book when used with verm. Straight coir IME sucks as bad as straight verm IMO, I've never seen a straight verm casing produce like a good 50/50+ ever, and we're talking thousands and every pro I know uses a blend for casings so that says something in itself. The bottom line is peat/verm/buffer IMO is best but in the hands of an pro ya never know!

I have used every sort of casing and coir works better than any.

Several flushes are produced without adding any water.

Never had overlay either.

Then you coir is very different than others experience.

As I said, for me(and if you read the posts at the Shroomery also for others) the coir dries out VERY FAST and overlays VERY EASILY since mycelium colonizes it and feeds on it instead of only permeating it as in a "normal" casing.

Yes very different and special coir. No misting to add water huh? Wow, where do I get this kind of coir? Its not like my bricks from PetCo that dries rather quickly.

What, ya think I am lying?

Did I claim to  be a master?

There are so many know-it-alls here, I don't know why I even bother to post.
-----------------------------------

The casings are rye, spawned to straw, castings and dung.  They are placed in a trashbag-lined cardboard box.  The spawn is mixed with the straw and dung, then compressed.  Next, a clear sheet of plastic wrap is placed over the top of the box, and held in place with tape.  The casings are placed in a dark closet for another week until completely colonized.  LASTLY, the coir brick is thrown in a pot of boiling water and allowed to cool.  Handfuls of coir are grabbed, squeezed and thrown evenly on the top of the casing.

Back in the dark everything goes, until the myc. just breaks the surface of the coir, then fruiting is induced.  Major flushes that rival any I have seen here are the result.  No watering and no humidity chambers needed.  Hell, no fanning is needed either, the thin saran wrap allows for plenty of air exchange.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, but you guys aren't teaching me anything.

I have used chopped coco fiber, vermiculite, perlite, peat, plain dirt and several combinations including some sand, pea gravel and yard clippings, but straight coir holds more moisture than any and works much better for me.  I guess I am not allowed to have an opinion.

If ya still haven't figured it out, the plastic wrap holds in the moisture, and additional watering is not needed....even after several flushes.

An added plus for coir is that it changes color with the amount of water it is holding.  Verm. doesn't.

Thanks for yer kind words.  I feel at home here.

Then the plastic wrap you are using accounts for the water retention. Even though coir holds a great amount of water, IMO it allows it to evaporate too qucikly also. So in your situation coir works well, for those fruiting under different conditions, other casing materials may offer better results.

I agree with you, but I don't argree that coir "sucks" and has no use as a casing.

From the beginning, it was only my opinion, I feel I was attacked for having an opinion.

Straight coir even performs better than a verm. /coir mix. IMO

I also disagree that coir "sucks" It is a viable option, I also feel that there are many here that are knowledgable and those who pretend to be and those who always have to say or do the opposite just like IRL. For you to have used straight coir the way you said would mean you have no choice but to have mastered at least that aspect of the fine art of mycology. We do not attack anyone for their opinion but as a very wise person once said to me "at least you dont run around givin idiot advice.......well you may give idiots advice.......peace"
