birth/dunk/coldshock/and humidity question
    #3242916 - 10/11/04 02:44 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hi. Please bear with me, I know these might sounded really dumb to some of you experts, but I want to make sure I don't screw this up and any help would be greatly appreciated. I've read through the posts and they just keep telling opposing opinions. I am getting ready to birth some cakes. I got my terrarium setup, put the perlite, etc. Left my gauge in over night and checked it this morning and it had maxed out on the humidity (it reads from 20% to 99% +/- 5%), temperature about 69 degrees. Some posts said too high humidity bad, some said good. ?????which one. Also, it sounds like cold shocking is a good think to do. I have incubated my cakes and pretty high temps and the humidity was fairly high in there too and they grew like crazy, but they do seem fairly moist. Should I just cold shock them in the jars overnight and wait to dunk after first flush since they are soooo moist? Thanks guys

The humidity in the incubator is really not important. Inside the jars.. it's pretty damn humid regardless of outside.

now the humidity in the terrarium is important. Keep it as high as you can. Too much humidity isn't bad. Too much condensation can lead to condensation on the cake, which could lead to all kinds of trouble.

do the dunk/cold shock/roll

Don't worry about the moisture in the jars if the cakes get 100% colonized. But You should still give a chance for the cake to replenish water. Wait a couple of days after 100% colonization, then open the jars, dump out the top verm layer carefully, put some water in the jar and throw them in the fridge for about 12-24 hours.(I know scatmanrav, but I still think any more would be a waste)

Then you can roll the cake in verm or case it.

Also, try to raise your temp in the terrarium to 73-76F. Mine hovers around 74. It's the ideal condition for fruiting.

Hope that helps.

Sam

You can dunk after the first flush, but I don't see why you shouldn't dunk and cold shock all at once before birthing if you plan on doing them as cakes.

Also, with cakes 99% humidity is good.  With cases you might only want I believe around 85% humidity.

Your temperature of 69 degrees should be fine for fruiting.  My fruiting chamber is 72 degrees constantly, so 3 degrees shouldn't hurt you.

Anyway, good luck Katrina!

Temps are good. You dont want to get over 75. Try to stay between 70-75.

With cakes, theres no such thing as to much humidity.

Dunk in the fridge over night. Get cold shocking and dunking done in one shot =)

Ok, listen to Sam on your temperature of the terrarium.  If you can get it up to 74, do it.  Sorry for any confusion.

Thanks guys. That helps a lot. One other thing I wasn't clear on from reading the other posts....do you fill the water all the way up? what kind of water? and someone said something about peroxide? how much?

You should get the whole cake under water. What i did was, I spooned out some of the verm and left about 1/4 inch verm in there. Then I pour water until the top of verm layer was slightly out of the jar.(cake will float) Then I close the lid and let a bit of water spill out. I think you can use other sterile stuff to try to keep the cake down, but I just used the verm layer to make sure the mycelium was under the water.

Good luck! Many Many Monster Mushie Wishies to you!

Yea, just fill the jar up until your cake is fully submerged, and then put a small capful of peroxide in (the peroxide cap), close the jar and put it in the fridge for 24 hours.

A good idea is to sterilize a pin with peroxide and stick it in the top of your cake and leave about half an inch of the pin sticking out, that way when the cake floats, the pin top will hit the lid of the jar and keep it from floating.

Get all that nasty dry verm outta there

verm is good. nasty is a greenie. Oh yeah, wet and fluffy verm is easier to scrape off than when you first open the jars. It virtually comes off by themselves after the dunk. I was sweating about scraping off mycelium by mistake... My mycelium did poke through a lot of verm you know. Anyways, do what he said. I think it'll be less messy than spilling water over intentionally.
