Cool Mist vs Ultra sonic
    #3242282 - 10/11/04 10:52 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

ok guys this might sound super noob to all you out there but I have a question after reading and reading and reading and of course seeing good pics Im not sure what the diff. is between the ultrasonic humidifiers and a cool mist. My ultrasonic humidifier says cool mist on the box as well so Im wondering if most people are just doubling up on these cool mist ultrasonic humidifiers.
Thanks for the help.

They are two seperate things. The Ultrasonic is like a fogger. The cool mist puts out fresh air with moisture in the air. The Ultrasonic is used to give humidity boost.

Ultrasonic is for humidity.
Cool mist is for air exchange.

There are only a few type of cool mist you can use. The ones with the "Wick" filter are the wrong ones and will not do what you need them to do. Vicks Cool Mist is the prefered module that most of us here use.

As for Ultrasonics. As long as it puts out the fog, its all good =)

Here is the Cool Mist.

ultrasonic humidifiers use a very fast oscilation in the water to make very very very very find mist. Some ultra sonic says cool mist but it's still referred to as ultrasonic. It's called cool mist sometimes because it produces cool vapors where as the steam ones make warm vapors. Cool mist we talk about is like vicks or Kaz. It uses a rotating blades called impellers to draw a very small amount of water into the center then push it out towards outside using centrifugal force. The impeller also breaks them into tiny water droplets. They have it set so that the heavier water droplets are pushed out farther outside with greater momentum and then is redirected back down into the reservoir. Lighter and smaller water droplets(vapors) are pushed out of the machine into atmosphere. It's like sonicare vs rotating electric tooth brushes.

I hope that helps.

Sam

OMG!!! thanks guys that picture of the vics one is the cool mist I keep seeing but all the pictures I looked at the unit was half hidden. Im gonna get me one of those bad boys. I heard they work real good with the martha stuart closets. At least thats the picture I saw them being used on. Do you use those instead of misting?

Cool mists can work to maintain humidity (enough for casings) but I don't know about a Martha sized chamber. Marthas work best with a cool mist into the chamber and an ultrasonic hooked up right above it. The ultrasonic goes on a timer, 15 minutes every hour or so, and the cool mist runs 24/7. Constant air exchange and good humidity for casings or cakes. You can also add a little Perilite on the bottom of the Martha to help with the humidity. IMO you should still mist occasionally if you have only a cool mist setup to a martha though.

You do not put perlite on the bottom of the Martha. Water collects down there and you have to use holes for drainage.

No need to mist with a Martha.

Run the Ultra for 10 minutes every two hours.

Here are the Vicks friends.

I've seen Martha setups with rubbermaids on the bottom with perilite in them. I don't see how this would hurt drainge, you just pull out the perilite if you have to wipe up the water the collects. Hyphae even had pics of Martha type greenhouse/closets sitting in huge rubbermaids filled with perilite too, excess water would drain into the perilite bin.

And he didn't ask to mist with a martha with an ultrasonic, he mentioned only using a cool mist. If not using an ultrasonic, he would need to mist IMO. If using an ultrasonic with the cool mist on a timer like Citric suggested then you shouldnt need to mist.

Mist anyways, it'll give you something to do besides watching them grow.

(I'm only joking around. don't take me seriously)

Using automated setups you only need to mist the casings to give them a drink. I had an old setup with just a rubbermaid bin and a vicks connected to it. It ran fine at 90% constant humidity. Only time I misted was to wet the casings a bit.

As for perlite in the Martha, yea if you use a rubbermaid on the bottom. But the bottom is not supported by anything, it just kinda lays a inch or so above the floor. When water fills up it sags down on it. Sure you could throw perlite in there, but ya really dont need it.

It's like someone who cleans there jars out with bleach, then soap, then pressure cooks them for good measure. It is ooooooooooooover kill =)

You mean you don't have to bleach, soap and PC to clean jars?

Right, very light misting to wet the casings (few pumps a day from hand mister) is all I used when running my cool mist alone with a martha type setup (also over 90% the whole time, cool mists work ok at keeping humidity high).

Perilite might not be needed but it can't hurt if someone is worried about their humidity and all they have is a cool mist on a martha and want to throw some in. I wouldn't put it loose in the bottom either. I wasn't aware of the 2 inch space under marthas, before this setup I made my own covering shelving with plastic sheeting so it went right to the ground.

By the by, I've found the best way to clean jars is just hot tap water sloshed around to get any chunks out then the dishwasher  They get PCed after but not until filled up with grain, hey PC is PC, anything left in the jar should (mostly) die when you sterilize them. Ok enough sidetrack now.

Yeah that should give you tons of idea on how to give yourself more humidity then you'll ever want.

I?ve been borrowing my ultrasonic from my landlord, and now he needs it back. Now I will buy a new humidifier, but if I have to choose one type, should I go with the ultrasonic or the cool mist???\
I have a terrarium of 35 gallons or so.

You want the Vicks, the Holmes is not the right type.
