Psilocybe argentipes in Japan - where, when, what?
    #3241196 - 10/11/04 01:41 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hi,

I have done some google searches, and shroomery archive searches but I can't quite find the info I'm after. I have plenty of pictures of P. Argentipes but I need Descriptions, and more importantly info on habitat.

Im in west honshu - where is this shroom found?
Is it common?
Where does it grow?
How long does the season last?

I really want to try and find some before the snows come.

cheers

The shroomery community is my only hope...

From my search on the net, the P.argentipe must not only be rare but also its probably not something you can go out hunting for...meaning they probably just sporatically pop up and youd be lucky to not only see, but also to be able to identify this shroom---being in "shroom hunting mode" helps catch your eye.
---Your best bet is to get a hold of Mushroom John (MJshroomer I think) I searched his site (http://www.mushroomjohn.com/species.htm) but found nothing regarding where to search for this species....but MJ might know somethin on side bout the argentipe or maybe relay and relate a hunting tek for a mushroom that has a similar growing habitat pattern to the argentipe....Sorry didnt help much but this board doesnt hear much from Japanese hunting. Didnt Japan just illegalize the selling of shrooms too? man that sucks...Im sure well see more japanese members since you cant buy them over the counter.

Good luck

Cheers for the reply - I also searhced MJ's site I found very little regarding this speicies. There is a couple of old threads about it, but nothing is said about where it grows and when.

I'm sure it can't be that hard to find.. if I only knew a few more details I could go out and hunt it down - most importantly - what it grows in.

Yes- japan recently outlawed the selling of psilocybian mushrooms, fresh and dried, which up until then were completely legal to buy, sell and consume.

However, I've always been a hunter myself, so I'd prefer to pick them anyway.

Here's what "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World" by Paul Stamets has to say about habitat:
"Gregarious to clustered on soil rich in woody debris, along trails, underneath or nearby Cryptomeria japonica, Quercus glauca, or Pinus Taeda. Known only from Japan."

He also mentions that they are suspected to be as potent as P. cyanescens.
