substrate.....pick one
    #3241153 - 10/11/04 01:33 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Now I already have a big ass block of Spaghnum moss that I got for, umm "free"....but what should I put along with it for my substrate?

1.Vermiculite
2.Brown rice flour
3.a grain
4.something else..."cant get coco coir"

What do you think would work best....also,should I put crushed oyster shells in with it all? Please include a substrate ratio with your answer.Iv worked with several substrates but not Spaghnum,I dont know what to do,lol.I do plan on casing them if that helps.

yeah you should just mix the moss and some flour that'll work? lol.
what exactly are you trying to do? also i'm pretty positive that you won't get anything off just moss and vermiculite.

your question is totally unclear, you are rambling nonsense. Looks to me as you're looking for substrate, but dont know the difference of a casing. Here is a step by step all the way through. http://www.shroomery.org/index/the/default/par/26177

If you've grown many times then why are you asking us? You should be telling us about this great new sphagnum moss substrate tek.
I have to believe you don't really know what you are doing because you wouldn't be asking us if you did.
So to answer your question, no you should not use moss as a substrate. Try reading the teks here and you will see that most people use either verm/brf or just plain grain usually rye or wbs.

Dude, sphagnum moss is just used as a casing ingredient, as is vermiculite (aside from pf-tek) and coco coir.  If you want a substrate try the pf-tek w/brown rice flour/verm. or do grains like rye, wild bird seed or popcorn. :yesnod: :goodluck: :mushroom2:

Yes iv grown many times very very succesfully........iv never fooled around with moss in any sort of way.Someone was all "hey, use this moss for your substrate",I was like can you do that?...they said "yes".So you are right when you say i dont know what im doing,iv never fucked around with moss.I know my ways and they work,i dont know others ways.Simply seeing if that was possible."You should be telling us about this great new sphagnum moss substrate tek.".......what a blind statement that is.I have never said I used moss for substrate.

What you should do is read the FAQs and learn what your doing so you can successfully grow them.

If your ways work what are you asking here for? What ways do you use? If we don't know what you do how can we tell you a better way to do things? To me though it sounds like you havn't a clue. Maybe I'm wrong though

Personally I use grains (rye berries) cased with coir/verm.
