Fall Boletes
    #3239996 - 10/10/04 06:44 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I was outside mowing my grass today, when I noticed a bunch of yellow mushrooms all over the place, near a pine tree.

My approach to Identification is as follows:

First I observed the habitat in which they are growing and got some pictures before i disturbed them.

Next, I picked a couple and took note of the gill structure. (or in this case pore structure). Upon touching them, my hands were stained yellowish brown by a sticky substance on the stems. I write down my observations about the stems, gills and sticky substance on a notepad.

I then collected a couple specimens and brought them inside to make bruising observations and spore prints. A good way to bruise boletes is to cut them down the middle.

I left them there for a while. Came back in about 30 mins and noticed that the cap flesh has bruised brownish with a slight tint of purple. I also take note of the spore print color which is brown.

At this point I'm ready to compile a list of features to use in a key to genera. Some important features in this case being the spore print color, the sticky stems, habitat, and bruising. After going over the key a few times, I decided that my collection best fits into
Suillus. Next I looked over some photos of Suillus species and they looked right. The species that matched the most was Suillus Americanus. It's listed as edible but I don't thing I will be having any

In conclusion, the whole process is fun!

Thanks for the input nofind_um!

I'm gonna be heading out into the woods next time it rains, in seek of some more fall species.
