Dunking is when you put your cakes in water to have them soak up moisture. It helps a ton.

Put a little hydrogen peroxide in the water and leave em for 18 hours.

Do you want to dunk right after birthing, or just after each flush?

yes cold shock them in the fridge. dunking is not necessary it just increases fruits. usually just dunking after each flush is fine. i dunked half of my jars and im going to compare how much it helped in a few weeks.

If your friends gonna case, don't dunk. just case. If he is going to grow off cakes, then keep them in the jars, take the top layer of verm off, put some water in the jars, add a capful off h2o2, then put the lids back on and keep them in the fridge, not freezer, for 12-24 hours. Then make all the cakes sing happy birthday.

You can and should dunk between the flushes, too.

You can also put a layer of verm on top and bottom and keep them moist, not wet, with a spray bottle throughout fruiting phase. Or you can just roll the cake around like a real kid in verm and do the same.

keeping the cake under water for too long will drown the mycelium. I've heard as many as 48 hours under water before, but still, all you need is about 12-24hours.

No it wont. Mycelium will last for months in water and be just fine. How do you think a liquid culture is kept for more then 48 hours? Dunk for as long as you want, but I'd be carful over a month. If you add h202 it will last longer though..not very much like a capful as was mentioned.

Have you dunked past 48hrs. scatmanrav? We have and found cakes to deteriorate very quicky after that from the inside out. Although a myc covered piece of grain under distilled water can last for years in this case it will not.

the perfect way to dunk is to leave ur jars in the jars, and fill them up with water that is ab out 1/100th full of bleach. thatll kill conams, but leave the myc.,a nd be super cheaper than hydrogen peroxide. u can put the int he refrigerator to cold shock, too, which will make them pi quicker. u should relaly doa casing, i did it my first grow,a nd it was great.

oh yeah, i forgot to say that i hav forgot i was dunking cakes before, and dunked them for 2 days, and they were A.O.K.

I will have to agree with Hyphae on the dunking for more that 48 hours. The cakes will just turn to mush and fall apart. It may at first look like they will be alright but with in 3-4 days they will just fall apart.

yup!
kramer dunks 24 hours when cakes are birthed and then 6-12 hours for later flushes
he notes that the few times he dunked longer, cakes did not perform as well :smirk:

Damned it. No, I meant a week. I don't know why I said two weeks, wasn't paying attention.

Edit:

You can kinda see both of them, the other one isn't as big yet anyway. Birthed at the same time after being dunked for about 6 1/2 days (actually). Different strains though..

They stayed together quite well. I had one out of 5 cakes fall apart but that one had only been dunked for like 20 hours  It's found a nice little home as a small casing though.

How many flushes did ya get of those scatmanrav? All our tests were done with BRF cakes.

There on their first flush right now..that pic above was taken minutes before uploading. I had some pints so I did some for fun to make cakes. Made 5 and 2 got dunked for 6 1/2 days (was up at harvest fest among other things). THose two pictured above. The other two that stayed cakes look similar and are in my room mates closet and one fell apart and was cased. Those three were dunked for almost a full day, something like 20 hours.

I was just seeing if there was any reason for me to try BRF but rye pints are so easy... The shrooms are kinda punny though
